He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ann, sister Ann Barnes of Emporia, son Steve and daughter-in-law Anne, daughter Stacie and son-in-law Phil (Midlothian), several loving nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members. He also wholeheartedly supported his grandchildren, Emma, Evan and Sloane who will forever miss their "Papa," his story-telling, life lessons, car rides to and from school, snack deliveries, and countless acts of kindness.
Lawrence, the son of World War II-era serviceman, William Luther Floyd and his wife Bettie, was a native of Emporia, VA, and relocated to Richmond in 1965. He later moved to Chesterfield County, where he resided in Midlothian beginning in 1973.
For many years, he worked in the insurance and transportation industries. His favorite position was his last, driving for the legendary Richmond grocer, Ukrop's. He visited various stores each day and chatted with many employees about any topic under the sun, most likely munching on some delicious baked goods from the breakroom.
Lawrence was able to retire at an early age, granting him unlimited opportunities to spend time with his grandchildren and family. He found happiness in picking up his grandkids for school almost every morning—often times with breakfast and treats in hand.
In recent years, he proudly cheered for the girls' lacrosse team at Clover Hill, enjoyed many musical performances at Tomahawk Creek Middle and Midlothian High, and attended FC Richmond youth soccer games, Richmond Olympiad gymnastics practices, and Midlothian Athletic Association football games.
Lawrence enjoyed classic cars, NASCAR (before it was cool), politics, Final 4 basketball, country music, stirring up homemade Brunswick Stew, Talk Radio, making his white chocolate/peanut butter annual Christmas cookies, and was a great shade tree mechanic during his prime.
He was a solid man, a fighter until the end, and would go any place at anytime to help his family, friends, or neighbors.
The family will host a visitation on Saturday, September 14, at Woody Funeral Home on 1020 Huguenot Road in Midlothian from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM, followed by a brief memorial service on-site. Family, friends and neighbors are invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, gifts, or donations, Lawrence would like everyone to save their money, have a nice dinner with their family, and tell a good story or two.
