Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Marsha was the daughter of the late Moulton D. “Bill” and Sara “Sally” Phelps. She built a life rooted in family, faith, and meaningful relationships, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Marsha was a proud 3rd generation graduate of Randolph-Macon College and went on to enjoy a successful career in retirement and financial planning with Principal Financial Group, where she worked for 26 years.
Outside of her career, Marsha was deeply engaged in her community. She was an active member of the Metro Richmond Women’s Club, volunteered with NMDP and a member of Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church in Midlothian, where her faith and generosity guided much of her life.
Marsha found her greatest joy in spending time with her family. She loved knitting, family gatherings, and cherished vacations to Topsail Island, North Carolina—creating memories that will be treasured for generations. She also had a passion for Pittsburgh sports, and always rooted for the Steelers, Penguins and Pirates. She delighted in being a mother and grandmother, and her warmth, encouragement, and steady presence will be profoundly missed.
She is survived by her son, Nathan Mathis (Laurie), and daughter, Rebecca Garber (Grant); eight beloved grandchildren, Emma, Elijah, Ava, Noah, Gehrett, Henry, Keyton, and Emilia; and her brothers, Bill (Sandra) and John (Kay) Phelps.
Marsha was preceded in death by her husband, David Emil Phelps Mathis, in 2016.
