

Marshall was born in Buena Vista, Colorado on August 10, 1938, to Maurice and Agnes Fowler Gingery. His early years were spent in Colorado until his father was transferred to Glacier National Park in Montana in 1953, where Marshall began his love of our National Parks. His first position was building and maintaining trails in Glacier at the age of sixteen. He enjoyed a successful 31-year career holding various management positions with the Department of the Interior and the National Park Service across the country including Acadia NP, Philadelphia, Harpers Ferry NHP, Mammoth Cave NP, Atlanta and the Blue Ridge Parkway. He served in several senior management positions in Washington DC and as a Regional Director with the Department of the Interior and his final tenure was as Assistant Superintendent, Science, Resource Management and Planning for Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.
Marshall has served as an active volunteer in the many communities where his career has taken him. In addition to serving as a Presbyterian elder, Rotarian, and on the Boy Scout Council in Montana and Wyoming, he served on the Teton County School Board in Wyoming where he was instrumental in the building of Wilson Elementary and the Middle School. Marshall also served on the City-County Planning Commissions in Wyoming and Montana, Chairman of the Governor’s Land Quality Board in Wyoming, Chairman of the American Red Cross in Wyoming, and Chairman of the Rotary Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park Association. He is a member of Masons, Shrine, Scottish Rite, and Eastern Star. He just completed his term on the Advisory Committee for the College of Letters and Science at Montana State University and is a member of the Huguenot Trails Rotary Club in Midlothian.
Marshall is a 1957 graduate of Columbia Falls High School in Montana and a graduate of Montana State University with degrees in Earth Science and Geography where he met his wife, Elaine Otis Gingery. Marshall and Elaine spent the first summer of marriage, on Bowman Lake in Glacier National Park where Marshall served as an Interpretive Ranger, with no electricity or refrigeration and they still remained married for sixty-four years sharing a love of travel, adventure and new places.
Marshall was an avid skier and hiker. Marshall considered his children and grandchildren his finest achievement. Children are Christine Payne (Jay) of Midlothian, Virginia, Marsha Demaree (Roger) of Marriottsville, Maryland and Keith (Lisa) Gingery of Jackson, Wyoming. Grandchildren include Daniel Payne (Anna) of Richmond, Virginia, Emily Wakefield (Jeffrey) of Durham, North Carolina, Grant Demaree (Ashley) of Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, Anna Erickson (Hayley) of Ridgewood, New Jersey, Marshall Demaree (Kaitie) of Issaquah, Washington, Clark Demaree (Julia) of Charleston, South Carolina, and Alexandra Gingery of Jackson, Wyoming. Great grandchildren are Harris and Martha Payne and Arthur and Alice Erickson. Marshall was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Gary Gingery.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Salisbury Presbyterian Church on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at 11am.
