
Mary Ann Ruth Kmetz Balbach passed away from End Stage Renal failure on 12 Feb.2015 in Richmond, VA. She was born on 20 Dec. 1936 to Mary Gaven Kmetz and Michael J. Kmetz in Newark NJ. A graduate of St. Aloysius Academy in Jersey City, NJ, Mary Ann married her high school sweetheart, Michael J. Balbach (Mickey) in 1954. They were married for almost 60 years when he passed away in March 2014. After moving to St. Croix, US Virgin Islands in 1968 she was secretary of the Island Center Theater, the St. Croix Drive In, treasurer of the Friends of Denmark Society, on the board of the Danish West Indian Society, and docent at Whim Great House and the Botanical Gardens. She and Mickey also owned Suds and Duds Laundry. Her work and love of travel took her to most of the Caribbean Islands, Denmark, Russia and France.
Upon moving to Hartwell, GA in the early 1980's, Mary Ann began delving into family history and genealogy. Research took her to Ireland, the Czech Republic, Romania, and Slovakia many times. Living in the historic Skelton house, Mary Ann also became involved in the Hartwell Garden Club, serving as President and as treasurer.
Retiring to Zephyr Hills, FL, she started the genealogy club in Southport Springs and taught genealogy classes. She continued her passion by attending many conferences around the U.S.
In NJ she leaves behind her son Michael (Joyce) and grandchildren Jennifer , Mark and Louie, as well as 4 great grandchildren; in NC a grandson, Michael; and in Richmond, her daughter, Mary Ann, Son-In -Law dearest, Jeff Markunas, and grandchildren, Christopher (special granddaughter- in- law Morgan Montgomery), Katie, and Nicholas.
Special thanks to the Visiting Angels, Elmcroft, Bon Secours Nursing and hospice staff who helped her through her last illnesses. There will be no service, but please remember Mary Ann by finding a long lost relative or discovering your family's history!
