The last time I saw Matt, he helped me with a flat tire at a gas station on Genito Rd., right across from Lucky’s in Brandermill.  Last weekend, I was in a terrible car crash, just one block away from the same gas station where I last saw him, just a few days before he died. The angels were there with me last Saturday, and there is no doubt in my mind that he was one of them. Love you Matt, I really miss you.

Matt you will be missed and always loved. A great friend that brought so many laughs and smiles to my face and our band of misfits at St. Andrew’s. You taught me a lot about life at such a young age. My love and thoughts to his daughter and family. Love you brother always until we meet again.

I really miss you Matt! You were such a good friend to me for the past 44 years. Through the ups and downs, and even in the days between...  you will and always have been a big Brother to me. Our family was so lucky to have Matt and The Grants as our close neighbors at the Winterberry Ridge house, built on the Swift Creek Reservoir in 1979. Matt was always there. We go wayyyy back in the day.  He was our 1st babysitter, no kidding.... my parents hired him in the year 1989 to watch Kurt and I while they went out to dinner. Really, they did. 😭  He only worked one day, but nobody died and our house didn't catch on fire, however our pet parakeet "Beaks" almost lost it's life in the rec room while we played pool. Our bright green,  Indian Ringed Neck Parakeet played pool by flirting with his reflection in the pool balls and bam! He's hit the ball in the hole with it's beak. Matt thought this bird was the funniest shit. Long story, short.... 
We got distracted and our new female German Shepherd, Bunting escaped her cage. Notorious in the neighborhood for her unpredictable temperament, Bunting attacked the table where Beaks was flirting with  pool balls. Our loud chaos is heard down the block, and bird feathers expload and float all over the place..  Matt held the dog down for a good 15 minutes, until Mom and Dad rush back home.  Matt got paid for his courageous effort, however he didn't get a call  back for  future babysitting gigs. Bunting ended up in a K-9 college off Hull Street, for Blind. Beaks moved to Papa's in Roanoke, VA and lived to 23 yrs old, thanks to Matt. 😃  In 1986, Mr. Grant bought the biggest
color t.v.  he could find & invited the neighborhood over for Superbowl XX, same year as Superbowl Shuffle. At age 6, I remember the  classic touchdown when the smiling, gap toothed, 350 lb Chicago Bear named "Refrigerator" William Perry, ran the ball for a touchdown! Chicago Bears vs. New England Patriots 46-10.  One of many stories I can tell my 6 yr old

Rest In Peace, Matt! You were taken away from us too soon! You will always be remembered and missed!

Matt…you were my bestfriend, one of the ones I can count on one hand. I look up to you and wish more than anything that  I could have been at your funeral. Only you and the good lord know that I would’ve been there if I would have known you had passed before now. You were my big brother, my fishing partner, and bestfriend. All the memories & goodtimes I cherished with you, your parents, and other friends we shared will never be forgotten. Until I see you again, I love you Matt❤️🎣

I met Matt when he enrolled at St. Andrew's, and we bonded instantly. We had many adventures, some good, some bad, all memorable. We hadn't spoken in a while, but I knew we'd see each other again, elsewhere, on a different path. Maybe we still will. My love and condolences to the family/loved ones, i am so incredibly sorry. and I grieve with you.

Matt will always have a place in my heart.  I am thankful we reconnected from so many years ago when we were together.  
I send my love to his daughter, Mom, Dad, sister and his nieces.  I pray God will comfort you and give you strength 🤍

My heart goes out to Matt’s family, friends, and his daughter. I thought I had found my forever and my heart is so broken. He had such a big heart & loved helping people. Matt was so passionate about fishing & disc golf. He tried to teach me disc golf but that was not in the cards for me. We had a lot of fun fishing together on the reservoir though, & he was so excited to introduce me to Billy Strings music. I will always cherish the memories we made. Love you forever.

I am beyond devasted to hear of the loss of Matt. Matt will always hold a special place in my heart and I am so grateful for the time I spent with him so many years ago. Im sending so much love to the Grant family and to his chosen family of friends and loved ones - I know the heartache I feel pales in comparison to the pain you all must be feeling  at this tragic moment.
