

Maureen Anne Fritton, 79, of Chesterfield, went to be with the Lord on May 4, 2021. Maureen was born in a taxi cab in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Donald and Harriet Cox. She attended Bishop Kenny High School in Jacksonville, Florida and was the valedictorian of her graduating class. She earned a scholarship to attend Radford University in Virginia. After graduation, she taught in Florida and Mississippi before moving back to Virginia. She earned her Master's Degree in Business Education from Virginia State University. She taught at Matoaca High School, where she was the Vocational Department Chair and Assistant Athletic Director. She also taught part-time at John Tyler Community College. In 1994, she was named Outstanding Business Educator of the Year by the Richmond Management Association. In 1995, she was recognized as the Teacher of the Year for Matoaca High School. After she retired, she remained involved with Matoaca High by working in the ticket booth for the athletic department. She affectionately became known as "the ticket lady". Maureen was instrumental in forming the Gates Athletic Association, where she served on the Board of Directors for years. When she wasn't working, she enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, correctly answering quiz show questions, cooking (especially baking goodies before Christmas) and spending time with her family, especially her beloved grandchildren.
Maureen is survived by her daughter, Stephanie (Mark) Bowen and her son, Stephen (Angie) Fritton. Her legacy also includes her precious grandchildren: Timothy, Sara, Jakub and Joshua. Her siblings include: Harriet (Andrew) Hrezo, Patricia (Robert) White, Donna-Marie (William) Kane, Donald (Susan) Cox, and John (Sharon) Cox. Maureen is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Her former husband, Stephen T. Fritton Jr. also survives her.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 3, 2021 at Woody Funeral Home-Huguenot. Her funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 4, 2021 at St. Ann Catholic Church. Interment will be at St. Ann Cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Chesterfield County Police Foundation, P.O. Box 1684, Chesterfield, VA 23832.
