Nancy Jeanne Kontos passed away peacefully this past Sunday, August 29th, at her home with her husband by her side, following a difficult illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmina and Edward Greene, as well as her sisters, Geraldine (Jerry) Anderson, Coleen Renoos, Barbara Swain, and Margaret Falk.
Nancy was born on February 7th, 1936, in Superior, Wisconsin. After graduating from high school there, she attended nursing school in Duluth, Minnesota, where she was trained as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She then attended nursing school at Maryland General Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, where she received her R.N. degree and met her husband Hermes who was an intern at the time. Nancy and Hermes were married on December 29, 1959, and subsequently moved to Richmond, where she worked as a nurse in obstetrics and gynecology at the Medical College of Virginia while Hermes was a medical resident. She continued to work even after her sons Michael and Christopher were born, but later retired from nursing after her son Timothy was born.
A caring, loving, and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Nancy was an avid horseback rider, who, after competing for several decades, instilled this love in her granddaughters, whom she frequently took for lessons at her local barn. Additionally, Nancy was a talented and skilled ceramic artist, often showcasing her pieces in shows across the city; Nancy’s love of ceramics and art in general helped foster artistic and creative outlets in her grandchildren.
Nancy is survived by her husband of 61 years, Hermes, her three sons, Michael (Richmond, VA) Christopher (Durham, NC), and Timothy (Richmond, VA), their six grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 3, 2021, beginning at 4 PM hosted by the Woody Funeral Home Huguenot Chapel, 1020 Huguenot Rd, Midlothian VA 23113. Immediately proceeding with the memorial service, guests will be welcomed to visit with the family until 7 PM.
