Nancy “Nan” Jane Wheater Sanborn, 81, of Midlothian, Va., a native of Oswegatchie, N.Y., died peacefully on July 28, 2021, having faced a long decline from dementia with courage and cheerfulness. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of forty years, Carleton “Carl” Harold Sanborn; her parents, Walter Howard and Doris Emma Beggs Wheater; and a brother, Robert Paul Wheater. She was the mother of Jeffrey Allen Sanborn and his wife, Sharon Anne Altringer Sanborn, of Crozet, Va.; Tonia Janeen Sanborn Anderson and her husband, Scott Richard Anderson, of Springfield, Va.; and Andrew Jonathan Sanborn and his wife, Jessie Waters Marshall Sanborn, of Glen Allen, Va.; and grandmother of Lauren Elizabeth, Victoria Anne, Jude Austin, Sean Patrick, and Maureen Quinn Sanborn; Benjamin Patrick and Sean Carleton Anderson; and Jane Lawson, George Walter, Lillian Pearl, and Thomas Andrew Sanborn. Survivors also include a brother, Walter “Pete” Howard Wheater, Jr. and his wife, Janet Jean Matthews Wheater; a sister, Roxanne Marie Wheater Cryer; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A graduate of the State University of New York (Oneonta) with a B.A. in home economics, she later earned her M.Ed. in early childhood education from Pennsylvania State. From 1977 until her retirement in 2005, Nan was an educator in Chesterfield County Public Schools, serving as an elementary school teacher, reading specialist, and assistant principal. Prior experience included teaching middle and high school in New Paltz, N.Y.; adult education in Oswego, N.Y.; and elementary school in Charlottesville and Richmond, Va. She maintained a lifelong love of travel, taking many camping trips with her family, including a 65-day cross-country trip. Nan served in many volunteer organizations, including the Sycamore Women’s Club and the Gamma Psi Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society for Women Educators (DKG), of which she was a founding member and past Chapter President. She was a long-time member of Bon Air United Methodist Church, and also attended Mass with her husband, Carl, at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church. Nan will be forever remembered for her sense of humor, care for others, work ethic, intelligence, generosity, and her amazing smile that touched everyone. A better mother and grandmother could not be found.
The family will receive friends at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 3rd. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 4th at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, 2700 Dolfield Drive. Following the Mass, interment will be held at Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
