Shields, Robert (Bobby) Woody, of North Chesterfield passed away on October 19, 2020. He was born in Danville, Virginia on May 17, 1935. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Womack Shields and Gracie Oakes Shields, his son, David Wayne Shields and his grandson, Joshua A. Morris. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Carolyn Snow Shields, his devoted daughter, Kim (Sissy) S. Carswell (Tom), grandchildren, Nikki Brickhouse (Jeffrey), Mark Morris; great-grandchildren, Luke and Carly Brickhouse; brother Billy N. Shields of Ringgold, VA, Peggy Edwards (Carroll) of New Kent County; nephews Steven Shields, Michael Edwards, and Mark Edwards.
After serving in the United States Air Force, Bobby moved back to Virginia and he joined the Virginia State Police. He worked out of State Police Division 1 on Route 1 near Ashland. Trooper Shields served Virginia from 1958 until 1973. During his fourteen years with the State Police, Bobby had the honor of being an assigned driver for three governors and was especially close to Governor and Mrs. Mills E. Godwin, Jr. and their daughter Becky.
Once he left the State Police, he started working with the Virginia Employment Commission in the Benefit Payment Control Unit and also as an UC Claims Investigator until his retirement.
Bobby and Carolyn enjoyed going to yard sales and antique shopping where he loved collecting tin toys and Lionel trains. His other hobbies included woodworking and working in his yard.
Bobby was a member of Grove Avenue Baptist Church where he dearly loved his Sunday school class and his church family.
The family would like to thank everyone at Elmcroft Assisted Living Facility for their love and compassion for both Bobby and Carolyn during their stay there. Also, Capital Caring Hospice for Bobby when he peacefully passed on October 19,
A Memorial Service will be held at Woody Funeral Home Huguenot Chapel, 1020 Midlothian Turnpike, Midlothian, VA 23113 on November 15, 2020 at 4:00 PM.
