Shirley Ann Hudson, 95, of Chesterfield, VA, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 27, 2026, where she was joyfully welcomed by her devoted husband of 73 years, Linwood Eugene Hudson; her loving parents, Agnes Ann and James Carlton Bugg; and her cherished sister, Barbara Marie Maslyk (Robert). She is survived by her brother, Bernard Carlton Bugg (Sharon); her children, Steven Eugene Hudson (Jo) and Lori Ann Hudson (Chuck); and her amazing grandson, Nicolas Eugene Hudson, who brought sunshine to her every day.
Her love story with Linwood began on a blind date in July 1951. She returned home that evening and told her father with certainty she would marry him. Three months later, on October 20, 1951, at 4:00 p.m., they exchanged vows at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. As reported in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, “Given in marriage by her father, Shirley wore a toast wool suit with brown accessories and carried a white prayer book adorned with a white orchid.” Theirs was a true love story for the ages.
Shirley was the epitome of a professional volunteer. Whether she was leading the PTA, serving as Treasurer for her family’s neighborhood pool, dispatching with the Manchester Volunteer Rescue Squad, operating a mental health crisis hotline, or welcoming voters as a Chief Election Official, she poured her whole heart into every task. At Providence United Methodist Church, her spiritual home, she shared her talents as Treasurer and as Education Chair, comforted grieving families and dished out legendary Brunswick stew. When she discovered the Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Christmas Mother, her heart found its truest calling. Shirley served as Food Chairperson, Assistant Treasurer and Vice Chair of the Board of Directors. She was instrumental in lobbying the Board of Supervisors until the County constructed the building they now use as the Christmas Center. Being honored as the 1992 Christmas Mother remains a treasured family memory—bitter cold parade and all.
She also volunteered for the Chesterfield County Historical Society and served as docent at Magnolia Grange for decades. Shirley was an active member of the Chesterfield Fair Association and was inducted into the Senior Volunteer Hall of Fame in 2007 for her selfless contributions to making Chesterfield County a better place.
Shirley was a woman of deep faith with a formidable spirit. She approached every opportunity with courage, enthusiasm, and grace, diving in headfirst without hesitation. Her sharp mind was always engaged—she loved to read voraciously and never passed up the chance to tackle a challenging crossword puzzle. She was also a talented baker who lovingly crafted custom cakes for her children's birthday celebrations and for many other special occasions, including family weddings.
She never met a stranger and could strike up a meaningful conversation with anyone. Shirley fiercely loved her family and instilled in her children, and her grandchild, the importance of hard work and strong values - traits that continue to serve them well. We will remember her beautiful smile and her infectious laugh. She left this world a little brighter, and much louder, than she originally found it. Shirley will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her generosity and the many lives she touched through service and love.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Providence United Methodist Church, 901 South Providence Road, North Chesterfield, VA 23236, with a reception to follow in the church social hall. Interment will follow at Dale Memorial Park.
In Shirley's honor, donations may be made to the Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Christmas Mother, P.O. Box 2500, Chesterfield, VA 23832—but she'd also approve of you doing something kind for a stranger.
