Sonia R. McDonald of Henrico County passed away suddenly on February 26, 2025, at Henrico Doctors Hospital, surrounded by her husband and two sons. She was born on March 7, 1939, in Wadena, Minnesota, but raised in Deer Creek by George and Esther Wilson Rebehn.
After attending the University of Minnesota, Sonia married Malcolm “Mac” McDonald on June 19, 1960, in Wadena, Minnesota, and then moved to New York, where Mac worked on Wall Street for ten years. They relocated to Northern Virginia in 1970 and eventually settled in Richmond in 1977. In 1999, they established their residence in Naples, Florida, where they spent most of their time but returned to Richmond to enjoy the summers with family and friends.
Sonia actively supported the Richmond arts and was a managing editor on the Richmond Symphony's award-winning Apron Strings cookbook, published in 1983. She was a member of Mensa who also enjoyed volunteering, was a certified youth soccer coach, and was a Cub Scout den mother. However, her primary focus was being an exceptional mother, wife, and friend to all whose lives she touched. She is survived by her husband, two sons, Malcolm and Gregory, and three grandchildren: Alexander, Edan, and Alexandra.
Visitation will be at Woody Funeral Home, Huguenot Chapel, 1020 Huguenot Rd, Midlothian, VA, on Monday, March 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. Interment will be held privately at Greenwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Richmond Ballet, Collegiate School, or the Immokalee Foundation in Naples, Florida.
Sonia will always be remembered for her loving smile, sense of humor, creativity, and quick wit, as well as for being a cherished friend to all who knew her.
