

She was a graduate of York High School in Elmhurst, IL, and Purdue University where she was an active member of the Golden Peppers and Mortar Board. She served for four years as a Naval officer before leaving the service to raise a family. She went on to get a master’s degree, followed by a long civil service career with the Department of Defense. The family spent years abroad with tours in London, Bermuda and Naples, Italy, followed by time in San Diego, CA and Norfolk, VA.
In her retirement, she was an amazingly helpful Grandma, a volunteer at WHRO, the Norfolk Library and the Virginia Stage Company, and an avid traveler, with memorable trips throughout Europe and the United States. She lived the last few years near family in Midlothian, VA.
She is survived by her sister in-law, Sally Hurst, daughters, Carrie Lonigan and Kathy Martin (Eric), and grandchildren, Patrick, Matthew and Kristin Bishop.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Hurst and Lois Feeve, and her brother, Bruce Hurst.
A memorial will be held later with interment at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to one of the organizations to which she frequently contributed, including WHRO, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation or the Virginia Stage Company.
