Wayne Alan Phillips, 81, of Moseley, Virginia, passed away on October 24, 2026. Born on July 2, 1945, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, he was the son of John Thomas Phillips and Hannah Gillespie Phillips.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Wayne found joy in life’s simple pleasures, from hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains to long walks and a good game of tennis. He treasured memories of playing tennis with Sandy, fondly recalling her skill and how difficult she was to beat. His curiosity and love of learning led him to Spanish classes and guitar lessons at the LLI school in Midlothian, Virginia, where he also served on the board of directors and was a member for 10 years. He also served as an elder at his Presbyterian church for 10 years. At home, he played his guitar for the simple pleasure of making music. Especially dear to his heart was the time he spent with his family, particularly his beloved grandchildren, Dylan and Owen.
Wayne’s professional life reflected his thoughtful nature, analytical gifts, and love of learning. He began his insurance career in homeowner liability insurance before finding his niche in medical malpractice underwriting in Richmond, Virginia. His talent for analysis and dedication to research guided a career with several companies, taking him to Chicago and New York City before he concluded his career as Vice President at Munich Re, a reinsurance company headquartered in Munich, Germany. In everyday life, Wayne shared that same curiosity and care, taking time to understand the world around him and thoughtfully consider his decisions.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Hufford Phillips; his three daughters, Susannah Jane Pinch, Heather Phillips Masri and her husband, David Neal Masri, Heidi Phillips Burns and her husband, David Wayne “Mel” Burns; his two grandsons, Dylan Scott Masri and Owen Phillips Masri, sons of Heather and Neal. He is also survived by David Riley Burns and Jacob Owen Burns, sons of David Wayne “Mel” Burns, and Jacob’s fiancée, Sophia Elizabeth Stell.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. on November 9, 2026, at the Woody Funeral Home Huguenot Chapel.
