He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joy Erikson Whitman, survived by sons Michael (Erin) and Stephen, and daughter Christine Johnson (Christopher), grandchildren Seth and Kayla. He is also survived by many extended family members and friends.
He attended John B. Cary elementary school, Albert H. Hill Junior High and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1967. He went on to graduate from John Tyler Community College (now Brightpoint) and then got his bachelor’s degree in business from Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College). After graduation, Wayne had a career in furniture management and sales with Heilig-Meyers Furniture Company that spanned 30 years, followed by 14 years with Haynes Furniture company.
When Wayne was a little boy, his dad bought him his first train set. They spent hours laying down track, building mountains and tunnels, setting up villages and train stops. Wayne loved his trains and the memories he built with his dad. Growing up, Wayne’s grandfather had a house on the Rappahannock River and loved to fish and crab there. He also loved playing tennis at the courts at Byrd Park in Richmond near his childhood home on French Street. Later, his hobbies included watching football (huge Redskin fan), NASCAR and Indy car racing. He was an active member of Lifepoint Church and faithfully served the Lord as a member of the dream team as a greeter. He also was a part of a men’s Bible study where he was endearingly known as a “gray beard.”
The family will receive friends at 11a.m. on Saturday, November 14, 2026, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 9400 Redbridge Rd. Richmond V.A. 23236 for his memorial service. Reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lifepoint Church Richmond Campus in honor of Wayne. Donate by going to lifepoint.org/give and select the Richmond campus.
The family would like to thank the staff of the CCU at Chippenham Hospital, our pastors and family at Lifepoint Church, the pastors and family at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Woody’s Funeral Home, and all of our other family and friends who have been so supportive and caring.
