Brandis, Wellington, 88, passed away on October 9, 2018 in Richmond, VA. A loving husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years Barbara (Bobbie), three children: Keith Brandis (Betty Ann), Robin Belcher (Ricky), Kimberly Bidwell (Rick); four grandchildren: Brad, Ben, Cory (Chelsea), Dana; one great grandson, Brooks; nieces and nephews; and a special friend and caregiver, Wayne Holmes. He was preceded in death by his parents, Linwood and Marie Brandis and siblings Lin Brandis (Grace), Marie Ida Bernhardt (Otto), Cammie Letein (Jack); and one granddaughter Christina Belcher.
Welly was born on October 27, 1929 in Richmond, VA. He graduated from John Marshall High School and was active in the Cadet Corps. He enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserves in 1947 and was called to active duty in 1951 and served until 1953. While enlisted in the reserves, he began working at C&P Telephone Co. until he retired after 43 years, concluding as an electrical engineer.
On June 26, 1954 he married the love of his life, Barbara, at Bainbridge Street Baptist Church, where they both served in the choir and Sunday School. Welly was a deacon and served on the Property Committee for many years. Welly and Barbara later joined Huguenot Baptist Church where he also served on the Property Committee. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and Talking Book where he repaired equipment for the visually impaired. Welly and Barbara spent many joyous summers together on the Rappahannock River with family and friends.
Visitation will be held Friday, October 12, from 6-8 p.m. at Woody Funeral Home on Huguenot Road. Services will be held at Woody on Saturday, October 13, at 3 p.m. Burial will be Monday, October 15, at 11 a.m. at Greenwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice.
