With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Alfred Joseph Martinez, who was born on November 28, 1934, in Grand Junction, Colorado. He departed from us on June 27, 2025. Alfred was a devoted husband to Evon Erickson, whom he married in 1955, and a proud father to their four beloved children: Mike, Kim, Rick, and Karlene. He stated, "The most memorable event in my life was the births of my four kids, I was so very proud of each and every one of them."
He was deeply cherished by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who remember him not only as Grandpa, but as a steady, loving presence throughout their lives:
“Our beloved Grandpa was more than a grandfather—he was a constant in every season of our lives. From cheering at ball games to welcoming us for sleepovers, and sending birthday cards filled with heartfelt words, playful poems, and silly drawings, he made each of us feel seen and cherished. His quiet strength, kindness, and unwavering thoughtfulness are woven forever into our family’s story.”
A true Renaissance man, Alfred had diverse interests and talents in music, athletics, and administration. As a teenager, he spent his summers traveling through Utah and Colorado with his father, Joe Lee, and godfather, Lucas Mascarenes, playing traditional Mexican music in small mining communities. He later performed guitar in jazz clubs throughout Utah. Alfred was awarded titles and trophies in both boxing and bowling, and he was particularly proud of the titles he earned as a Golden Gloves competitor, winning his first title in 1952 and again in 1953 at the Tournament of Champions. Alfred served his country honorably in the U.S. Army as a Sargent in Germany from 1955 to 1957, a testament to his dedication and spirit of service. He received the Army Sharpshooter badge for proficiency in marksmanship during this time.
His career at the U.S. Postal Service spanned from 1957 to 1990, culminating in his role as postmaster in Magna, Utah, where he was highly respected and well-loved by the community.
Alfred will be deeply missed, but his love lives on in every memory, and every life he touched. Always loved, forever remembered.
A celebration of Alfred J. Martinez’s life will be held on July 7, 2025, at Wasatch Mortuary, with a viewing at 10:00 a.m. followed by a blessing and entombment at 11:00 a.m.
