Barbara was born in Salt Lake City on October 18th 1932 to Florence and Kent Evans. As a young woman, she loved the outdoors, enjoying waterskiing, swimming, and snow skiing. She spent a winter working at Idaho’s Sun Valley Ski Resort, and a couple summers working at the Grand Canyon in Arizona. She also loved to dance. In later years, she took up golf and tennis, and backpacked in Wyoming and Idaho with her friends’ hiking group.
She graduated in education from the University of Utah and remained a staunch Ute fan her entire life.
In 1954, she married Bill Northrup. They were devoted to each other for 67 years, before Bill’s passing in 2021. Together they raised three children, Diane, Jim and Katie. And despite her motherly worrying, Barbara relished a family life of picnics, camping, hiking and hanging out at the cabin.
Barbara loved children, and in 1967 began work at the Holladay United Church of Christ preschool, where she remained a teacher for 30 wonderful years. She truly delighted in her job and is well remembered for her warmth and kindness.
Barbara is survived by her three adoring children: Diane (Errol), Jim (Victoria); and Katie (Mark); her beloved grandchildren Lukas (Hannah), Zachary (Andrea) and Joshua; her darling great-grandchild Allison; her devoted sister Bonnie Dorris; and a loving crew of nephews and nieces.
A graveside service will be held at Bountiful City Cemetery (2224 S. 200 W. Bountiful) on Saturday, August 12th at 10:00 am. A celebration of life will follow at 12 noon at the Holladay United Church of Christ. (2631 E. Murray Holladay Road).
