Birge Layton Stewart, age 85, passed away December 1, 2010 at the Utah State Veterans Nursing home in Salt Lake City, Utah. Born September 24, 1925 in Salt Lake City to LeConte and Zipporah Layton Stewart. He graduated from Davis High in 1943, volunteered for the Navy at age 17 and was stationed in the South Pacific for four years. Upon returning, he enrolled at the University of Utah graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Law and the degree of Juris Doctor. He continued in the Naval Reserve until he retired as Lieutenant Commander in 1985. He was honored to serve his county. Birge met Florine Hope Olson whom he married June 26, 1954, 56 years ago. Birge was many things to many people. Loving husband, father, grandfather, friend and hero. He was awarded the Carnegie Bronze Medal for risking his life to save a fisherman from drowning in Brainard Lake, Colorado in 1959.
He is survived by his wife Florine, son Mark Layton Stewart (Debbie), daughter Diane Elizabeth Stewart Heiner (Scott), grandchildren Lynn Guthrie (Misty), Ken Guthrie (Jason), Danielle Anspach (Keith), Jason Heiner, Anne Heiner, two great grandchildren Jayden and Levi Guthrie, brother Maynard Dixon Stewart and sister Mary Anna Stewart. Preceded in death by his parents, brother John Stewart and sister-in-law Helen Stewart. Birge will be remembered for his dedication to his family, friends and country.
Memorial service to be held Saturday, December 11, at 2:00 P.M. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary Chapel, 3401 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah. Visitation one hour prior to memorial service.
