Brent Dermont Larsen, 90, of Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2026. Born on November 7, 1935, in Salt Lake City to Dermont Roosevelt Larsen and Helen Louise Dougherty. He was loved and known by many and was a friend to everyone. Anywhere he went, he ran into someone he knew. His family and friends lovingly referred to him as Lars, G-Pa, Gramps, Grumpa, Grampa-Great, and on the golf course, he was Old Man Lars.
Growing up in Sugar House, he had an amazing childhood living next to extended family, and enjoyed being close to cousins. As a child, he walked past the Sugar House Prison, where Sugar House Park is now, on his way to elementary school. He attended Highland Park, Lafayette, and Lowell Elementary schools, Irving Junior High, and graduated from South High School in 1954. He cherished early memories of hunting and fishing trips with his father at Lily Lake, often joined by his mother, sister, aunts, uncles, and cousins, who shared in those family outings and created lasting bonds through time spent together in the outdoors. This continued and fostered new traditions with his own family and posterity.
On August 10, 1956, Brent married Darlene Ann Ohms in Salt Lake City. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on December 16, 1964, and remained devoted members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout their lives. They served faithfully in various callings and as service missionaries at the Utah State Prison. He and Dar are especially remembered for their service together as ward librarians and playfully took on the role of “ushers" from the back pew, always supporting and observing from their favorite spot.
Brent served honorably as a Specialist Fifth Class (E-5) in the U.S. Army Reserve, and he always spoke fondly of his time at Fort Ord. Brent enjoyed a 31-year career as an advertising account executive, selling for the Deseret News and the Salt Lake Tribune. He had a unique ability to build strong connections and friendships. Brent and Dar ushered at the University of Utah for over 50 years, beginning in 1968, working at athletic events, concerts, and plays. What began as fun second jobs became a 52-year passion for the University of Utah and being die-hard Ute fans. Their four children grew up attending events and sometimes ushered alongside them. Above all, they cherished the lasting relationships formed year after year. GO UTES!!
An avid sportsman, he participated in many golf, pool, bowling, and softball leagues, along with coaching his children’s teams. His passion for softball grew into both coaching a semi-pro team and supporting a South High School alumni team that he played on into his 70s. Brent and Dar supported and attended their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in all their sporting and school events.
Family, friends, and neighbors will never forget being welcomed into Brent and Dar's home, where warmth and genuine connection were always present. As their children started families of their own, Sunday nights became the place to be—grandchildren and those "adopted" into the family gathered there for love, laughter, and belonging. Brent was "Dad" to many beyond his own children and a friend to everyone he met. If you knew Brent, you felt loved and ministered to—his kind heart, thoughtful care, and quiet support made all who crossed his path feel included, valued, and deeply cared for.
Brent was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Darlene Ann Ohms Larsen; his parents, Dermont Roosevelt and Helen Louise Larsen; and his sister, Sharon Louise Larsen.
He is survived by his children: Brenda Louise Gardner (Doug), Brian Dermont Larsen (Debbie), Debi Larsen Sager (Andy), and Danny Larsen (Allison); 34 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.
