Born in Salt Lake City on August 20, 1975, Cameron was a loving and loyal son to his parents, John Dann Nelson and April Malmborg Nelson. He was raised just below the University of Utah and was a lifelong Ute fan.
Cameron had an idyllic childhood and got into lots of mischief with his three siblings, cousins, and good friends from the neighborhood. He attended Wasatch Elementary, Bryant Junior High, and East High. He was also a natural athlete and very competitive. He grew up mountain biking, playing baseball, football, and golf. Cameron built many lasting relationships in his younger years and also developed a sense of teamwork. His dad was always his favorite golf team buddy.
Cameron was always an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After high school, Cameron served a mission in the Brazil Manaus Mission and couldn’t have loved it more. His testimony of Jesus Christ and his gospel were solidified in those two years. He developed a deep love for his fellow missionaries, the country, people, culture, and language. He was an effective missionary serving with love and leading by his example of hard work and faith. He always said, “The Gospel is simple” but he was known for his deeply profound comments in church classes. Cameron served faithfully in many callings but had a special love for his time with the Young Men and Elders Quorum. He was always one of the first to sign up to help with any project or activity and was best known in his wards and family for his serving heart.
Shortly after returning home from Brazil, Cameron started working in the telecommunications industry where he had a successful career in sales and management for 30 years. He also spent some time in the medical sales and long-arm quilting industries. Many of his colleagues became lasting friends and held a special place in his heart, especially the WorldCom Wireless crew.
Cameron married Suzanne Michelle Bigelow in the Salt Lake Temple on August 11, 1999. Their wedding day was especially memorable because it coincided with the Salt Lake Tornado! After settling in Draper, they had two incredible children, Cameron Calder (21) and Hillary Nan (19). Cameron loved being a father more than anything else. He was a selfless provider for his family. He wanted to be a good example to his “Bubba and Birdie” and went back to school to earn a degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. As the kids grew, Cameron looked for opportunities to spend time with them, which often meant attending some kind of church camp (even though he was more of a hotel kind of guy). A devoted father, he was at every practice, game, performance, and recital cheering them on with his special whistle. He spent countless hours on Lagoon rides, swimming in the neighbors’ pool, helping with all subjects and grade levels of homework, and practicing driving. There was nothing he wouldn’t have done for his children and family. No sacrifice was too big for them. He loved them fiercely and they all knew it. Even after their divorce in 2022, Cameron and Suzanne remained dear friends and committed partners in parenting their children.
Cameron had a beautiful smile, wonderful sense of humor, and a contagious laugh. He was not only book-smart, but street-smart too. He had many talents. He was a fix-it genius. He could design and build a sprinkler system from start to finish, create beautiful rooms in unfinished spaces, and turn a gutted house into a home. He was practical and kind. He was thoughtful and made everyone around him feel like a friend. He paid compliments and forgave freely. He let you know he was proud of you unless you were a bad driver, then you got a thumbs down gesture. He had a beautiful voice and sang along to the most eclectic mix of music while he worked on all kinds of projects and hobbies. He loved watches, hats, shoes, grills, and tools and always found reason to add another to his collections. He was generous and strong. Most of all he was dedicated to his family and friends and would have done anything for them.
Cameron is loved and survived by his children, parents, siblings Brittney Anderson (Thomas), Ethan Nelson (Heather), and Farah Wiegand (Jake), many nieces and nephews, a huge extended family, countless friends, and his dog Dixie. He will be missed more than words can express, but we will try to make him proud and honor his life with ours.
A celebration of life will be held at 12pm on Saturday, July 18, 2026 at the 7th Ward Chapel on 12353 South 600 East in Draper, UT 84020.
