Daniel Melville Day was born 12 December 1943 in Salt Lake City, UT. He lived a full life for 75 years
before suffering irreparable damage from a massive stroke. He passed peacefully a few days later on 11
April 2019 surrounded by his five siblings and other family members. Left behind are his siblings: Karin
Rhead (Jim), Alisyn Boone (Joseph), Tom (Linda), Deon Farnes (Steve), and Shelley. Preceded in death
by parents, W. Daniel Day and Margaret L. Jansson Day.
Danny was affectionately known as Uncle Danny by family members. He adored children and they
adored him. He loved unconditionally, and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints. Through the years he consistently wished a happy birthday to friends, colleagues,
acquaintances, and family; sent get well cards to those who were ill or recovering from an injury; visited
loved ones in the hospital; and called others randomly to let them know they were in his thoughts. He
was so thoughtful of others and could still be a great tease. Everyone loved Danny!
Danny attended school for special needs students through junior high. He first learned the benefits of
work by mowing lawns and bagging groceries. He purchased his own TV and car and obtained his driver
license. Although he only drove for a short period of time, over the years he became independent
enough to live on his own. He loved his privacy and guarded his independence like a hawk. As an adult,
he lived at the American Fork Training School for several years, graduated to group home living, and
finally independent living. His group home parents became lifelong friends. And with the support of
family and TURN Community Services, life for Danny was full. He enjoyed going to Orem’s senior center
for lunch, bingo, and movie with friends; attending his Healthy Choices class; eating lunch and going
grocery shopping with his trainer; and spending evenings with friends eating dinner, bowling, and
attending broadway plays and ballets. He participated in TURN’s river running trips, road trips to
Wendover, and Tuacahn performances, to name a few. Danny was grateful for his experiences and
always looked forward to future events and vacations with family and friends. He enjoyed visits with
family all around the country. He also enjoyed reading the morning paper, watching the old classics on
TV like Dennis the Menace, Bonanza, and The Andy Griffith Show. His collection of hundreds of stuffed
animals and trinkets brought him joy. And Coke Zero was his drink of choice. How he loved Coke Zero!
Danny’s contributions to the community included volunteering at the Action Food Bank in Provo,
Community Action in Provo, and the Bishop’s Storehouse in Lindon. He fundraised for the March of
Dimes, the Cancer Fund, and the American Heart Association. He supported the Boy Scouts of America
food drives. He was employed at Fresh Market, Excelsior Hotel where he was named Employee of the
Month and Employee of the Year, Magleby’s Restaurant in Provo, Timpview High School in Orem, and
University of Utah in Salt Lake City. What an inspiration he was to all! Although Danny will be sorely
missed, all who knew him have been blessed beyond measure.
Please join the family for Danny’s funeral service at 11:00 a.m. and a viewing and visitation at 10:00 a.m.
on Saturday, 20 April 2019 at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, UT. In lieu
of flowers, the family suggests making a donation to TURN Community Services.
