Darryl Hunger was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 22, 1947. He was born to Henry and Olive Hunger. Darryl graduated from Highland High School in 1965 and continued his education at Westminster College. He graduated with a Bachelors Degree in 1969 and was the senior class president.
His first job was at Lowell Bennion Boys Ranch in Victor, Idaho. He worked there for two summers as a counselor of the 10 to 12-year-olds. During his time as a counselor he met the superintendent of Jordan School District.
This was the start of his teaching career which lasted over 30 years. He started at Butler Junior High School in the Physical Education Department where he taught for 11 years. He transferred to Indian Hills Middle School where he instructed and prepared middle school youth for the next 20 years.
After retiring from teaching he continued his passion of helping others by driving a school bus for Jordan School District for nine more years.
In his retirement years he enjoyed his trusted canine friends Toby and TJ. Darryl valued their companionship more than anyone else ever could.
He often spoke of his weekly movie outing each Saturday with his good friend Lee. This was one of the many simple pleasures he enjoyed.
He took pride in the many different roles he had with the LDS Church where he served in the following callings: Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, two presidencies in the Aaronic Priesthood, Central Valley YSA Activity Director and President, Sunday School President and Executive Secretary at Highland Cove, and First Counselor in the branch presidency there.
He continued to serve others by attending the temple often to perform ordinances.
Darryl was punctual, dependable and had a soft spot in his heart for the retirement community members he recently served.
He had a few very great friends throughout his life who loved him unconditionally. They have been a strong support system for him throughout the years. Thank you to Lee Mitchell, Clay Ellis, Sherry Wasden and Jim Hinkle for all of your devotion and genuine love.
If you knew Darryl on a personal level, he probably had fun nickname for you, whether or not you wanted one. Often times we didn’t know where those names came from but they always made us laugh.
Darryl is survived by his loving daughter Tianna, whom he called “Mic”, her husband, Jason “Jace”, and his delightful grandson Dax “B-Dax”, whom he knows will continue to grow up strong in living the gospel. He is also survived by his sweet and adoring niece Alisha “Al” Fontenot, her husband, Steve, and their son, Jesse “Cowboy”.
