David’s early years were filled with the things that brought him joy: music, movies, dancing, concerts, and Broadway shows. Those who knew him remember how naturally he connected with others, and how his sweet spirit could turn even a casual meeting into a lasting bond. He was beloved by many friends, including his closest friend of 44 years, James Sountris.
In 1983, David met Shane Merlin Nelsen. They fell in love, becoming life-long partners for over 42 years. They were married on June 5th, 2023.
David dedicated 33 years of service to the Department of Veteran Affairs Administration. He cared deeply for the employees he worked with and took pride in serving veterans, guided by his patriotic heart. He retired from the VA in 2017, leaving behind a legacy of steady commitment and genuine care for the people around him.
David loved animals throughout his life, owning many dogs and even adopting a cat. Following his retirement, David adopted Bella the Yorkie, who became his devoted support animal for over 9 years. Bella was by his side when he passed.
Shortly after retirement, David began experiencing headaches. On November 22, 2019, he received an MRI where brain and lung cancer were found, beginning David’s 7 year battle with cancer. During that time, David endured 4 brain surgeries and 3 rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. Cancer was the struggle of his life.
David is survived by his husband, Shane Merlin Nelsen; his brother, Skipper Keller; his sister, Diane Sassenberger; his furry companion, Bella; and the enormously large family he married into. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Nelly Sweeden.
David’s memory remains in the many friendships he built, the love he shared with family, and the steady, kind-hearted way he moved through the world. He will be deeply missed.
David will be laid to rest at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 Highland Dr, Millcreek. Family and friends are invited to attend a brief graveside on Thursday, May 21, 2026 at 4:00 pm.
