In the early morning hours of September 17, 2025, Donald “Don” LeRoy Egbert passed away peacefully after a long, full, and joyful life. He was born on November 26, 1927, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Moss and Marie Egbert and grew up on Bryan Avenue alongside his sister, Beverly.
Don attended Whittier Elementary, Lincoln Junior High, and proudly graduated as a South High Cub before pursuing a degree in Accounting at the University of Utah. While attending college, he served his country in both World War II and the Korean War.
Friends introduced him to the love of his life, Arlene, and in 1956 they were married. Together they built a home in East Millcreek with a breathtaking view of Mount Olympus, where they raised their daughters, Jolynn and Karen. Their “starter home” quickly became their forever home, filled with six decades of laughter, music, and love.
Don dedicated more than 60 years to his work as a CPA, serving clients from his beloved Sugar House office with its little garden out back. He loved his work, but even more, he loved the friendships it brought him. Known for his boundless energy and warmth, Don never met a stranger. If you happened to be near him around noon, you were getting invited out to lunch. He valued experiences over possessions, filling his life with skiing, gardening, travel, and adventures with family and friends. His ski days were fondly described as “ho-hum days in paradise.”
Don was always quick with a smile, a song, and a story. He could strike up a conversation with anyone and made those around him feel seen, valued, and cared for. His life was defined by joy, generosity, and love, and he will be remembered for his high-five greetings, his cheerful spirit, and his unwavering devotion to his family.
Don is survived by his daughter Karen (Glade) Butterfield; grandchildren Patrick (Tara) Boice, Courtney Santos, Ashley (Jake) Cannon, Parker Boice, Caitlin Butterfield, McKenna Butterfield, Austin Butterfield, and Eli Butterfield; and great-grandchildren Aidan, Olivia, Elsje, and Finn Boice; Ethan and Sophie Santos; Bianca, Quincy, and Beatrix Cannon; and Remington, Laney, Jones, and Albie Boice.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Arlene; his daughter Jolynn; his son-in-law R. Lane Boice; and his sister, Beverly Savage.
Funeral services will be held Monday, September 22, at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. A viewing will be held from 10:30–11:00 a.m., followed by the service at 11:00 a.m., with graveside services immediately thereafter.
Don’s legacy lives on in the laughter, music, and love he so freely shared. In memory of Don, his family asks that you enjoy lunch with someone you love this week.
