Eldon Garn Holbrook passed away peacefully at home at the age of 97 on November 22, 2022, surrounded by his five children. He lived a long and productive life, and enjoyed good health until his final days.
Eldon was born on July 25, 1925, to Horace and Leona Holbrook in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the youngest of eight children and is the last of them to pass away. He attended the University of Utah where he met his wife and the love of his life, Marian Amelia Lindquist. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 27, 1951. Following his graduation from the University of Utah, he enrolled in the Air Force and attended Officer Training School in Texas. Eldon was first assigned to Florida and then to Japan where their first son Richard was born at the Tachikawa Air Force Base.
Eldon enjoyed a long and successful career in business. He started his career with Utoco Oil Company which was acquired by Standard Oil of Indiana, known as Amoco. He was transferred frequently as he advanced in responsibility, moving his family to Boise ID, Salt Lake City UT, Denver CO, Casper WY and finally Chicago IL, where the family lived for 18 years. He retired as the Manager of Marketing Training from Amoco in 1986. He and Marian then moved back to Salt Lake City where they enjoyed their retirement years with many friends and family.
Eldon was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many callings. He is still fondly remembered for his service as a Bishop and in many stake leadership positions in the Chicago area. One of the highlights of his early retirement was serving two missions with his sweetheart, Marian. They served in London, England and Oakland, California. Eldon was known for his kind and friendly manner. He was very wise and very practical, with much attention to detail, qualities that helped him succeed in his church service. He cared about people and was always involved in thinking of ways to help others.
Eldon enjoyed traveling with family and friends, visiting many countries throughout the world. He enjoyed water and snow skiing into his 80’s. Eldon’s favorite activity was spending time with his family. The family cabin at Hebgen Lake, Montana was a favorite gathering place for his family and friends. He was focused on bringing his family together to create memories and strengthen family bonds.
Perhaps Eldon’s greatest legacy will be his wonderful family. He and Marian raised five successful and caring children. They have 21 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. He was very proud of his family and loved to talk about them with his friends. Eldon is preceded in death by his wife Marian. He is survived by his children Richard (Cynthia) Holbrook, James (Kandra) Holbrook, Bryan (Melissa) Holbrook, Jeffrey (Patrice) Holbrook, and Ann (Donaldson) Hartman.
