George William Irvine

George William (Bill) Irvin, age 90 passed away on Friday, March 4, 2016, at his home after a long, hard fight with congestive heart failure. He was born August 15, 1925 in Salt Lake City, Utah the sixth child of James Milldown and Elizabeth Muirhead McAllister Irvine. He grew up in the avenues area of Salt Lake City attending Ensign Elementary, Bryant Jr. High and West High School. In June 2944, he enlisted in the Army serving in Company H, 108th Infantry Regiment, 40th Division. His time in the Army was spent as part of the Southern Philippines (Liberation) as well as in Korea after WWII ended disarming the Japanese army. While working for Safeway Stores, Incorporated, Bill met a wonderful girl with beautiful red hair from Ogden, Utah whom he fell in love with. On June 24, 1955, Bill married Athleen Swenson in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were blessed with four children with whom they created many wonderful memories, especially at the Family Cabin in Island Park, Idaho. He retired from Safeway Stores, Incorporated after 45 years of dedicated service. He is survived by his wife of 60 ½ years, Athleen, his daughter Judy Lynne (John) Howard, sons William Blake (Pam) Irvine, and Michael Swenson (Margo) Irvine, 11 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren as well as extended family members. He was preceded in death by his son James David Irvine his parents and his sisters Elizabeth Irvine, Susan Ferguson, Thelma Carraway, Lavon James, Phyllis Smith and his brother James M. Irvine and their spouses. The family wishes to thank Drs Steven A Rokeach, Robert B. Westermann and Lara L. Hardman for the care they provided Bill. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at the Olympus 3rd Ward Chapel located at 4100 South Camille Street (2480 East) in Holladay, Utah. A viewing will be Wednesday, March 9, 2016 from 6:00-8:00 pm at the church and 1 hour prior to the services on Thursday. Interment will take place at Memorial Estates Mountain View Cemetery, 3115 East 7800 South, Salt Lake City, Utah.
