Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Hal H Bourne, passed away peacefully at home in the arms of his sweetheart and surrounded by his family on December 20, 2021. He was born on March 10, 1932 in Ogden, Utah, the first child of Horton V. and Marguerite Sill Bourne. He spent all of his childhood living and working on his family farm in Farmington. His was a life of family and farm. He loved teasing his younger sister Jackie, growing things, raising animals, and the idea of being self-sufficient. Hal grew up knowing the value of hard work.
As a child he loved school and athletics and excelled in both. He proudly attended Davis High School where he enjoyed science, mechanics, carpentry, and the football team, where he was chosen for the All-State team and as a natural-born leader, served as the president of the Athletic Club. His achievements led to a full-ride football scholarship at the University of Utah, where he played for three years under Jack Curtice. He was a star in his academic studies as well as football and made lasting friendships with his fellow players from all over the country. His scholarship allowed him to graduate from medical school at the University of Utah in 1957, where he served as president of his medical school class. He completed his medical training at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he was the Chief Resident in Urology. While in Seattle, he also served in the U.S. Public Health Service for two years.
During his college years, he married Alice Annette Montgomery. Just before he finished his medical training, she passed away in 1964, leaving Hal a widower with four young children. He returned to Salt Lake City and married Margueretta Atwood, they were later divorced. Two more children were added to his family. He married Cynthia Shields in 1987. She was a widow with three daughters, and Hal and Cynthia added two more children to the family. His eleven children were his greatest joy, and he was devoted to them and their families. Together they worked hard for 35 years to unify and love their big, wonderful family.
He loved his urology medical practice and was highly regarded by all the physicians he worked with. He saw working with patients as a privilege and cherished his association with his colleagues, especially his partners, Richard E. Lee, Charles W. Sorenson, and L. Scott Chidester. He was a distinguished member of the medical staff at Holy Cross Hospital, Primary Children’s Hospital, and LDS Hospital. He was elected the president of the medical staff at LDS and Primary Children’s Hospitals, chaired the division of urology, and served as the secretary of the Salt Lake Medical Society and president of the Utah Urological Society. He was a good doctor, a good teacher, well-respected and trustworthy in his career.
Hal loved the outdoors and spent his life enjoying this beautiful world. He was an avid tennis player, skied until he was almost 80 years old, and loved hiking, biking, and a good game of golf. He was able to travel the world and experience many different cultures and people. Hal’s laugh and sense of humor are unforgettable. His love of food is legendary and his lifelong love of learning was an inspiration to all.
Hal was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was blessed to remember the valiant testimony he had of Jesus Christ before he came to this earth. That remembrance came early in his life and was self-motivated. His life experiences gave him many opportunities to grow close to his Savior, and he always relied on Him. He was so grateful to serve in many capacities as a bishop, high councilor, youth leader, scoutmaster, home teacher/ministering brother, and missionary. He truly loved his Savior and humbly followed Him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Horton and Marguerite Bourne. He is survived by his wife and sweetheart, Cynthia, his sister, Jackie Marsden, his devoted children; Stephanie (Peter) Waldo, Michael (Judi) Bourne, Robert (Gemini) Bourne, Susan (David) Spafford, Rebecca (Noel) Case, Jon Bourne, Jacquelyn (Warren) Pate, Marianne (David) Carter, Suzanne (David) Stewart, Elizabeth (Clark) Featherstone, Jessica (Peter) Tolman, 33 grandchildren (and their 11 spouses) and 33 great-grandchildren.
