Jack Bond Goodwin passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 11, 2025 just days before his 101st birthday. He was born in Milford, Utah June 24, 1924—the oldest of two children born to George Carlos Goodwin and Cuma Bond.
Jack will be remembered for his engaging smile, his acts of kindness, and his life of service to family, country, church and friends. His gift as a mechanic in the Army Air Corps during WWII kept planes in the air for the fighting forces abroad. When the war was over and his term of duty was complete, Jack left on a two-year mission to the New England states for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Following his mission and while he attended Brigham Young University, he met his future wife Jean Marie McKell. They were married in the Salt Lake LDS temple (August 15, 1951) and began a loving 59-year marriage.
Jack and Jean’s first daughter was born just before he completed his Bachelor’s Degree. He went on to complete a Masters degree from Utah State University in 1953, before moving to Phoenix AZ to begin his career with the United States Department of Agriculture. Their second daughter was born in Phoenix and their son was born a year and a half later in Austin, TX. He served as Bishop for the LDS church while in Texas and fulfilled many church callings during his lifetime. Jack’s profession took him all over the country. Over the years, he and his family lived in Arizona, Texas, Wisconsin, and Virginia before returning to Utah in 1973. Jack was a devoted husband and father, beloved and respected by his children for the honorable way he lived his life and for the lessons he continually taught them.
After retirement, Jack took his wife to visit he Holy Lands. Together, they fulfilled a life-long dream of hers. Then he pursued his own dream—to become a temple worker for the Church. For many years he served in the Salt Lake LDS temple until Jean developed health problems, and he devoted himself to her care until her passing in Oct 2010.
Jack loved working in the garden and sharing its fruits with neighbors. Over the years, many were recipients of his home grown produce during the harvest. He will be remembered for his trips throughout the neighborhood delivering sacks of fruits and vegetables.
Jack is preceded in death by his parents, his younger brother, William Albert Goodwin, his wife and one grandchild. He is survived by three children, Jilene, Mary Jean (MJ) and Jack McKell, twelve grandchildren, thirty-eight great grandchildren, and three great, great grandchildren.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at the Salt Lake Veterans Nursing home, for the love and care they extended during his final days.
Memorial services will be held July 12, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at the East Mill Creek 9th Ward Chapel located at 3750 S. Hillside Lane, Salt Lake City, UT. A viewing will be held at 12:00 p.m. prior to the memorial service.
Jack will be laid to rest in Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 S. Highland Drive, Millcreek, UT 84106-3316.
