His mother, Evelyn, wrote in her journal:
“We were so thrilled to finally have a son. Then we found he had Down Syndrome. My first thoughts were “Why me Lord?” What did I do wrong to deserve this? Then Bishop Davis said - Who are you feeling sorry for - you or him? I know he was a chosen spirit who did not have to come to earth to be tested but these were heartbreaking months and years. The song I am a Child of God comes to mind. And so my needs are great. Help me to understand his words before it grows too late. When Jimmy was 6 we found a place in Orem where he could live with other children like himself. This was probably the hardest decision I ever had to face.”
Even after moving away, Jimmy remained deeply loved and connected to his family. His Aunt Betty faithfully visited him every Sunday, spending time and playing with him. She often would have him over for holidays and other special events. When the Orem home eventually closed, Jimmy moved to a group home in Ogden. In 1981 Jimmy became part of Turn Community Services. Words can’t fully express our gratitude to TURN - for caring for Jimmy day after day, helping him get to work, doctor appointments, parties, gatherings, and holidays. They didn’t just support him - they became a second family. And for that we are truly thankful.
Jimmy adored Superheroes - especially Spider-Man. He loved going to the movies, the scarier the better and he never turned down a good meal. Some of his favorites were hamburgers, fries, pizza, ding-dongs, and most importantly Diet Coke.
What we will remember most about Jimmy is his smile. It could light up the room. Even in his final days, he was able to produce the best heart warming smile to the nurses that brought him comfort, when seeing pictures of himself, and when Missy would read him a Spiderman Book.
Jimmy taught us that joy doesn’t need words, and that a simple smile can hold a world of love. He was a blessing to all who knew him - a chosen spirit, just as his mother once said. And while we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the light he brought into our lives.
We love you Jimmy!
