Jeff was born on November 29, 1942, in Riverside, California, the first of five children of Robert Wayne Mix and Mary Cannon Mix.
Shortly after Jeff’s birth his father left to serve in World War II. Jeff and his mother moved to Magna, Utah, to live with his grandparents. Two years later when his father returned, the family moved to Ogden and then to Millcreek where he attended Olympus High School. He enjoyed serving in student government, working on his Jeep, and skiing at Alta.
Jeff served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Scotland from 1962 to 1964 where he developed a love for the people and the culture. He passed his love of serving the Lord to his children and grandchildren.
After his mission Jeff attended the University of Utah where he met Carol Christine Neeley. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 12, 1967. After graduating from the University of Utah, Jeff and Chris moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where Jeff attended dental school at Washington University and completed an orthodontic residency at St. Louis University.
Jeff and Chris moved their growing family to Rexburg, Idaho, where Jeff established his orthodontic practice. In addition to being a wonderful place to raise their seven children, Rexburg was also close to the family cabin at Macks Inn, a place that Jeff referred to as "the center of the universe” and as having “the same zip code as heaven.” The family spent summers at the cabin where Jeff served as the family photographer, river guide, and jack-of-all-trades. Hosting family and friends at the cabin was a source of joy for Jeff and Chris, and created treasured family memories.
In 1993, Jeff and Chris moved from Rexburg to Gilbert, Arizona, where they finished raising their family, grew Jeff’s orthodontic practice, and spent time boating and enjoying their grandchildren. In 2004, Jeff was diagnosed with liver failure and was blessed to receive a liver transplant in 2007. Jeff loved being an orthodontist and was able to return to work after the transplant but had to retire in 2012 due to Parkinson’s disease. Jeff was passionate about photography and in retirement applied his energy to growing his camera accessories business, Mix Camerawerx.
In 2015, Jeff moved to Riverton, Utah, where he was lovingly cared for by his daughter Allison and her family. When additional care was needed due to his advancing Parkinson's disease, Jeff moved to Legacy House in Bountiful where he made many new friends.
Jeff will be remembered for his buoyant personality, an affinity for making friends and putting others at ease, an inquisitive and inventive mind, and an enduring zest for life despite many years of health challenges. We love you, Dad, and Grandpa! Until we meet again, please snap a few photos of heaven for us.
Jeff is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jimmy; former wife, Chris; and a grandson, Isaac Trinnaman. He is survived by his siblings Rosemary (Jack) Wixom, Roseann (Ralph) Neilson, and Paul (Leslie) Mix; children Allison (Marshall) Smith, Heather (Reed) Sutherland, Tiffany (David) Smith, Cannon (Kathryn) Mix, David (Jennifer) Mix, Kellie (Tim) Harper, and Holly (Matt) Trinnaman; 27 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff and volunteers at Legacy House of Bountiful for the love and care they provided Jeff.
