JoAnn Timpson Richards died peacefully in her home December 3, 2011. Born July 4, 1931 to June Greenwood Waters and Alma A. Timpson in Los Angeles, California. A graduate of East High School in Salt Lake City, Utah, she attended both Brigham Young University and the University of Utah where she studied home, family, and consumer science, and even served as an attendant to the U of U Homecoming Queen.
JoAnn married her "true love" Joseph Covey Richards, Sr. on December 18, 1951 in the Salt Lake Temple, and for 60 years, they remained completely devoted to each other. Joe tirelessly stood by her side through her 13 year struggle with cancer, which she valiantly endured to the very end. Her life's true focus and commitment centered on providing a wonderful home for her husband and family. Spending time with them was something she treasured.
As a lifelong dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, JoAnn served in the Primary, Relief Society, and Young Women. She loved teaching the gospel and served with her husband in a Church Service Mission in the Physical Facilities Department, as a Salt Lake Temple worker, and as a missionary in the Inner City Project Mission. She also actively worked in many community, political, and educational organizations through the years: PTA, Cub Scouts, and President of The Utah Women's Architectural League. She cherished her involvement with The Daughters of The Utah Pioneers where she studied, presented, and also had the privilege to donate various personal ancestral artifacts.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph Covey Richards, Sr.; two brothers: Jay Ross Timpson (Annabelle) and Gary A. Timpson (Nurimar); five sons: Spencer Merrill, Joseph Covey Jr., Scott Lynn (Jana Parker), Jonathan Willard (Bridgette Bird), Daniel Stewart (Brandi Tanton); seventeen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all.
