Salt Lake City, Utah-Joanne McDonald. Rip was born February 12, 1946 in Salt Lake City to George and Marion McDonald and passed away February 26, 2023 surrounded by her family and the outstanding caregivers at Legacy House Assisted Living.
Growing up in Salt Lake City, she graduated from Highland High school where she met a tall, lanky, blonde, dutchman, Doug; they dated through high school and married in 1965. Doug and Joanne came together and built a remarkable life. Joanne was the distinguished CEO of the Rip home and gave every effort and all her energy to create and maintain a beautiful home (which she lovingly referred to as her castle), raise their children and be a part of an extraordinary community of neighbors. She was a competitive tennis player, an avid snow and water skier, reader, cross stitcher, sewer, painter and gardener.
She served in many church callings but particularly loved working with the Young Women and Primary. She always did her very best to fulfill every calling and touched so many individuals during her service.
Her favorite role was Grandma. Oh how she loved each one of her grandkids, Sterling, Sam, Adam, Luke, Will, Jake, Nick, Max, Abby and Maggie. She sought to individually connect and build personal relationships with each. She attended countless sporting events, graduations, mission farewells, courts of honor, recitals, church baptisms and ordinations and was a thoughtful gift giver that included a hand-made scrapbook for each grandchild. Our very best memories with our parents include summers in Island Park and traveling in the motorhome all over the western United States where mom savored every moment together as a family.
She taught us so much throughout her life including how to love, how to selflessly serve and the value of family dinner - every. single. night. She was feisty, tough as nails, yet warm and loving and a prolific crier. She will be sorely missed but her reunion with Doug, her parents, sister Nora and other loved ones brings so much comfort.
Joanne was preceded in death by her husband Douglas Rip, her parents, George and Marion McDonald, her sister Nora McDonald and brother-in-law G. William Rip. Survived by her brother, Ed McDonald; children Dan (Chad), Jennifer (Ben) and David (Emily), eight grandsons and two sweet granddaughters. She will be deeply missed by all.
A profound thank you to all of her caregivers at the Legacy Assisted Living center. The night of her passing, she was surrounded by her family and an army of caregivers she deeply touched, each of which lovingly cared for her during her time there.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 2, 2023 at 11:00 a.m at the East Millcreek chapel on 3750 S. Hillside Lane, Salt Lake City, viewing prior at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be held at Wasatch Lawn Cemetery.
