Passed Away: December 18, 2022 in Salt Lake City Utah Born: August 25, 1936 to William Henry and Thelma Wallis Ruppel in Salt Lake City, UT
John was raised in Roosevelt, Utah, where with his two brothers, he enjoyed sports, camping, and fishing in a close knit community. While at Wasatch Academy he lettered in all the sports he participated in, as well as in band, earning himself a scholarship to the UofU in tennis, as well as in the marching band. He enthusiastically continued to follow sports, play tennis and enjoy music throughout his life.
John met Wendy Evans while at the UofU and they married at the Army Chapel in Fort Carson, Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1959 while John trained as an officer in the Army. John’s career started in retail at Auerbachs in Salt Lake City, then with JCPenney’s throughout the midwest, Home Store Furniture in Paradise, California, then ZCMI in Salt Lake City, UT. Upon retirement he authored and published two books on Caregiving and started non-profit services in support of caregivers.
Ultimately his greatest focus was his family and his service to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For most of his adult life he devoted countless hours in leadership positions, and found great fulfillment in serving in the temple, serving a mission, and connecting generations through genealogy research, devotedly giving his time and efforts until his death due to Parkinson’s complications.
John is survived by his wife, Wendy Evans Ruppel, children Holly & Brad Baker, John Robert Jr and Stefanie Ruppel, Richard and Lynette Ruppel, Mark and Danielle Ruppel, daughter in law Christi Ruppel, brother Richard Ruppel, as well as 9 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Services will be January 14, 2023 at 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel at 2795 E Crestview Drive, Salt Lake City, UT. Grave dedication will occur at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 S Highland Drive, Salt Lake City at the conclusion of the services.
