John Douglas Steinagel beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend returned to his Heavenly Father on March 9th, 2026. Doug was born on May 13, 1936 at Sutterville hospital in Sacramento, California to Herman and Maude Steinagel. Doug spent his entire childhood and adolescence in the Sacramento area, and graduated from McClatchy high school in 1954. As a young adult Doug accepted a call to serve as a full time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints in the Spanish American mission. While serving his 30 month mission, Doug became fluent in Spanish and remained so for his entire life. Doug attended Brigham Young University where he received a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and secondary education. During this time at BYU, he also met his sweetheart JoAnn Steinagel to whom he was sealed for time and all eternity in the Los Angeles temple in 1960.
Doug and JoAnn started their family while living in Sacramento, but eventually settled in Sandy, Utah where they lived for 47 years. They were blessed with 4 children, John Jr., Jeff, James, and Jerry. Doug was a gifted teacher and loved his time teaching in the classroom. He eventually returned to school at the University of Utah where he completed a master’s degree in education administration in order to advance his career. Prior to retiring Doug worked as a vice principal and principal in the Jordan School District. After retiring, Doug loved to golf with his other retired friends but dedicated most of his free time to caring for his wife JoAnn until her passing in 2020.
Doug was a faithful and covenant member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and had a strong testimony of His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. During his life Doug had many opportunities to serve in callings within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints including in the Bishopric and high council. Doug was also a temple worker at the Jordan River Temple for 30 years. A calling which he loved dearly.
Doug was a gifted coach and athlete, having played and coached wrestling, baseball, and basketball at many levels. Doug cherished the friendships he made with neighbors and the members of the Sandy 1st and Sandy Fairoaks Wards. Doug leaves behind a legacy of many former students whose lives he enriched while teaching in the classroom, and a life lived of devoted faith and service to others. Doug was known for making fast friends both at work and church and was hard working and service oriented throughout his life.
Doug was blessed with 9 grandchildren and 4 great grand-children. Doug is survived by his 4 children John Steinagel, Jeff Steinagel (Lisa), James Steinagel (Brandy), Jerry Steinagel (Gina), and his sister Joanne Challburg. He was preceded in death by his loving wife JoAnn, parents Herman and Maude Steinagel, his brother James Steinagel, and sisters Judith Bayley and Jeanne Christensen.
The family wishes to express gratitude to the nurses at Dignity Hospice and the caregivers from visiting angels for the loving and dignified manner in which they cared for Doug.
