Our beautiful, sweet mom, Karen Lockyer, is now in restful peace. She passed away on January 24, 2021 with her daughters at her side. Karen Re Nae Lockyer was born on May 21, 1941 in Kaysville, Utah, to the late John and Vera Gardner. She will be forever remembered by her two daughters Stephanie Goodart (Roy) and Lori Warby (Lyle), and her four grandkids, Bailey Goodart (Alan), Jenna Warby, Adisen Goodart, and Sam Warby.
She married her true love, the late Joseph Lockyer, on September 18, 1964. They did everything together, from enjoying vacations to San Diego and Las Vegas, to just sitting on the porch or watching TV downstairs.
Our mom’s true calling was taking care of others. She was always concerned about how others were doing and feeling. Karen was extremely nurturing to all around her, especially her husband, daughters and grandchildren. She was so generous with her time and took care of each of her grandkids while her daughters worked, each day was filled with watching movies, and playing games. Being a grandma, better known as “Namaw” or “Wamaw”, was one of the greatest joys in her life.
As most people know, one of Karen’s favorite things in life was chocolate!! Not just your average everyday chocolate, (although it would do) but the “good kind” of chocolate. Some of her favorites were Rebecca’s, See’s, Fernwood’s and The Chocolate Cottage’s seafoam.
Karen enjoyed being part of the Pep Club at West High School. She was especially proud when they chose her design for the uniforms one year. She was also a great bowler. After high school, she became a hairdresser at the Temple Square Beauty Salon in downtown Salt Lake City. This is where she met her love, Joe. He was selling hair products to the salon one day and saw her and asked a worker, “Who is that pretty red head with the beautiful legs?”
She was a devoted wife and homemaker and would sew some of her daughters’ clothes, as well as Halloween and dance costumes. She also would make cakes for the “cake walks” held at the elementary school, the most famous was a Snoopy cake. Karen also enjoyed working part time at White Shoes Dance Academy and helping with all the various dance recitals.
Our mom and “Namaw” will be truly missed. We are all better people for have been loved by her.
Services to honor Karen will be held Sunday, January 31st at 12 noon
In the chapel at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah
