Kenneth LeRoy Van Leeuwen, 85, passed away peacefully at his home on the morning of August 15, 2019. Ken was born July 5, 1934 in Salt Lake City, Utah to John Van Leeuwen and Sarah DeBry Van Leeuwen. He graduated from South High School where he loved and played all sports especially football. After graduation, he married his high school sweetheart and love of his life Claudia Harris on October 8, 1953 in the Salt Lake Temple. Since her passing almost two years ago, not a day has gone by that he hasn’t expressed his abiding love for her and how he longed to be with her again.
Ken was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He proudly worked for Mountain Fuel Supply Co., for 40 years as a Field Sales Representative and built many lasting friendships. He coached little league football and baseball where he was influential in the lives of many young men. He also was a high school and little league football Referee for over 30 years.
Ken was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He had a very strong testimony and loved the Lord with all of his heart. He served in many callings throughout his life, but his most cherished memories and experiences came from serving as Bishop of the Winder 10th Ward. He unconditionally loved everyone, especially those who carried the heaviest burdens and in so doing touched and influenced the lives of many.
In the past few years, Ken’s favorite thing to do was sit in his front yard. Our family expresses a special thanks to his exceptional neighbors and many of their sweet children who took a few minutes to stop and visit with him while he was out there. He cherished those moments and it truly brightened his day! Additionally, we extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Mele, Fane, Sepa, Jamie, Jameson and his private piano concerts, Ross and all those who tirelessly cared for him.
Ken is survived by his brother Ray Van Leeuwen, sister Josie Herridge, six children: Craig (Melody), Michael (Jackie), Melinda Workman, Kent (Judi), Karen Hyde (Jerry) and Chris (Melissa), 24 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by Parents, wife Claudia, grandson K.C. Van Leeuwen, and siblings, Gertie, Jake and Violet.
We love you Dad! You will be dearly missed!!
