Lia’s long journey of illness finally took its toll after a series of close calls and a tough fight to get better.
She was born in Amsterdam, Holland, on the 21st of July 1937 where she lived with her parents Jan and Neeltje Strietman and brothers Jan and Edgar.
At the age of 19 she was called to serve an LDS mission in the Netherlands and afterwards worked as nurse before moving to the United States.
After serving a full time mission for the LDS Church in the Netherlands she moved to California to marry Verle A. Workman in the Los Angeles LDS Temple on August 9, 1961.
Lia and Verle moved to Utah to pursue his education where Lia supported his efforts and Verle graduated from college and began teaching at Skyline High School.
After giving life to 7 children and raising a strong family, Verle suffered a life altering aneurysm that rendered him disabled and required his long term care. With seven children between the ages of 1-14, three of them still in diapers Lia’s life changed. With the help of an amazing ward and friends she raised her children to love one another, to believe in God and to serve others. Her ability to step in and help her children when there were little or no financial resources was nothing short of miraculous.
For the past 10 years Lia has suffered from a series of medical problems that caused her to move from her home in Cottonwood Heights to assisted living where she was able to make a very comfortable home. Lia remained strong willed and persistent throughout her life and focused on making those around her feel special.
Lia loved music, Facebook, tulips, and helping others. She would post flowers and beautiful scenes for her friends on Facebook and brought light, hope and happiness to many. She loved cooking on holidays and making her favorite dutch treats for friends and neighbors. Her kindness to the medical staff and support staff is legendary as she received visits from so many people whose lives she touched while in hospice.
Liahona is survived by her brother Edgar Strietman, her children Joann and Randy Meitler, Diane and Blair Douglass, Verl and Coleen Workman, Leann and Hani Elkebbi, Joseph Workman and Maryann and Anthony Farlaino and her grandchildren Steven Meitler, Marianne Meitler, Sarah Meitler, Neil Douglass, Matt Douglass, Brianne Ika, Nate Workman, Ryan Workman, Anna Workman, Jake Workman, Carly Workman, Maya Elkebbi, Zach Elkebbi, Riley Workman, Brandy Workman, Megan Workman, and Angelina Farlaino and great grandchild Sloane Ika as well as several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
