Lucy Borovatz Zurlo, passed peacefully on to the next step of her journey at Sunrise of Sandy with her son Brandon and her cat “Beauty” at her bedside, Tuesday, February 7 2017. She was 85 years old. In her final years, she challenged her Alzheimers diagnosis with her characteristic courage, humor, affection and dignity. She could often be heard referring to herself as a “tough old bird”.
A graduate of Murray High School, Lucy had a long and successful career in the medical field starting out as a medical secretary and retiring as the Administrative Assistant to the Chairman of Child Psychology at Primary Children’s Hospital, where she had been employed for over 20 years. She chose early retirement to be home to care for her elderly mother and sister Katie who was battling cancer.
Lucy had a sharp mind, quick wit and was passionate and tenacious about people and issues she cared about. She followed local and national politics, loved to cook and was an animal lover. After retiring Lucy had a number of opportunities to realize her life-long dream to travel with her son Brandon. Among her favorite trips were a Christmas cruise in 2001 through the Panama Canal and a cruise from Singapore to Hong Kong over the Christmas holiday in 1996. She celebrated her 75th birthday on a 14 day cruise around the Hawaiian Islands in 2009. Lucy was functionally literate in Croatian. She maintained her reading skills by reading Croatian publications and her speaking and writing skills though her daily interactions with her mother and step-father Rose and Vick Marinich.
Lucy is survived by her son and only child, Angelo “Brandon” Zurlo who is a digital marketing executive in New York City. She was preceded in death by her natural father, Matt Ticac, mother and stepfather Rose and Vick Marinich, sister Katie Borovac, brother Matt Borovatz and his wife Lena and brother Steve Borovatz. (survived by his wife Dorothy) and stepbrothers Stephan Marinich and John Marinich.
Her son Brandon would like to extend a heartfelt thanks the Reminiscence team at Sunrise of Sandy for the tender loving care the provided over the past 9 months. The same heartfelt thanks goes the hospice team at Solstice Hospice, with a big hug for hospice nurse Joleen Wilkenson who called on Lucy nearly every day and did everything possible to make her final weeks as comfortable and safe as possible.
