

Marvin J Hammond, age 87 passed away at home surrounded by his family. He was born on June 2, 1928 in Moab, Utah to West and Lottie Cornwall Hammond. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1952 in Marketing and Finance and began his banking career in 1955 at Continental Bank and Trust Co. He served in many executive capacities including trust investment, branch administration, retirement and profit sharing plans, and installment loans. He was a member of the board of Directors. He retired in 1993 from US Bank.
He served in the Utah National Guard from 1950 to 1984. Throughout his career he commanded various artillery batteries, battalions, and corps. He was activated in 1961 by Federal Order of the US Army as battery commander during the Berlin Wall Crisis. He especially enjoyed his last assignment, commander of Troop Command Headquarters from 1980 to 1983. He served his country with distinction, always the model of a true leader.
For eight years he served on the Utah State Retirement Board.
For many years he was a part owner of Hammond Tots and Toys, a family company started by his father West.
He was a faithful member of the LDS church, serving in many capacities including a member of the high council and bishopric. He served a mission to the New England States where he traveled "without purse or script." He later served a mission with his wife in the Salt Lake Inner City. Throughout his life, he was active in various capacities in the Boy Scout program and helped many achieve their Eagle Scout award.
As we mourn his passing, we admire and remember a strong man who reached every goal he set for himself and excelled at everything he did. He worked hard and shared his success generously with his family, friends, and community. He was a loyal and devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather and great grandfather, always ready to listen, give advice and help, serving as anchor for all. Marvin traveled the world, knew every continent and its history and geography. An avid reader, Marvin gave joy to many an eager listener with his poetry recitations. His was a full life, lived long and well. We are grateful to have been part of it as we say "until we meet again." Our hearts are filled with love and beautiful memories.
He married Geraldine Sperry in 1951, later divorced. In 1976 he married Gabriele Elling Kunewa, later solemnized in the Salt Lake temple. He was the proud father of 2 sons and 7 daughters. He is survived by his loving wife, daughters Rebecca (Bill) Black, Margaret (Jeff) Larsen, Mary (Ron) Hale, Tracy (Craig) Pease, Christine (Bryan) Walker, Stephanie (Birthe) Hegstad, Michielle (Mons) Stange, and son Jason, 24 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers West and Herald, and son Cordell Sperry Hammond.
A viewing will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, June 22, at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 Highland Drive, Salt Lake City. Funeral Services will be at 12 o'clock noon at the LDS Stake Center, 3103 Craig Drive. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
