He was born June 1, 1941, in Copenhagen, Denmark. As a boy, he crossed the Atlantic by ship with his mother, Thora, and his older sister, Vivi, beginning a new life in the United States. The family eventually settled in Twin Falls, Idaho, where he attended Twin Falls High School. He loved spending his days playing football, playing in a band, performing in theater, hanging with friends, and graduated in 1960.
After high school, he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Denmark, returning for a time to the country of his birth. He later attended Brigham Young University, where he played college football. He married Yetta Borgesen in the Idaho Falls Temple in 1965 and became a father to his daughter Metta in 1966 and his daughter Nina in 1982.
Throughout his life, he possessed an endlessly curious mind. He loved science, philosophy, poetry, computers, and music, and he remained interested in ideas and in understanding the world around him throughout the entirety of his life. His curiosity eventually became part of his professional life as well. He built a career in IT and was a pioneer in the computer technology field. He built systems for Western Film Service and Morris Air, Transamerica, and Kodak. He went on to work as a senior database administrator for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Williams, Oracle, and Xactware. His work took him across the country, living in Utah, California, Texas, and Georgia.
He retired in 2011 and spent the years that followed traveling, enjoying long walks with his beloved dog, Konge, and, most importantly, spending time with his growing family.
He leaves behind his daughters, Metta Clark (Tom) and Nina Dalley (John), along with his grandchildren, Damien (Zara), Alex, Mia, Lena, Isabelle, Elise, his chosen son Adrian Sandoval (Sarah and daughter Alicia), his chosen brother Jim Ketchum (Stacy), along with 2 nephews Bryant Johnson (Sandra), Brent Johnson (Jodi), and 3 nieces Angela Zavar (Kurt), Stacy Olmstead (Mark), Christina DeRop (Dax). He was preceded in death by his mother, Thora Clausen and his sister, Vivi Johnson and brother-in-law Wayne Johnson.
His life began an ocean away, in Copenhagen, and carried him through more than eight decades of learning, working, wondering, traveling, loving, and building a family. Those who loved him will remember not simply the facts of his life, but the particular person who lived it—his curiosity, his presence, his razor sharp wit, his dry humor, the things that delighted him, and the countless small ways he became part of the fabric of the lives of the people around him who completely adored him.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Friday, October 9, at 11:00 a.m. at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park and Mortuary in Salt Lake City, Utah.
