"Grandma Great"
Our beloved Myrl Hamilton, age 96, died September 27, 2010, at her home in Salt Lake City,Utah. The second daughter of James D. and Sally McGee Washburn, she was born in Grayson (Blanding) Utah, on September 6, 1914. She graduated as valedictorian of Jordan High School and received a teaching certificate from BYU.
Myrl and her sweetheart, Weston E. Hamilton, were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 28, 1934, and have three sons: W. Kerm (Barbara), J. Chad (Judy), and Monty D. (Linda). Myrl’s pride and joy was her family. Just as she took tender care of her legendary garden, she planted her children and grandchildren in the gospel of Jesus Christ. She shared her steadfast testimony in word and deed. Her scalawag grandkids adored her. She told the best stories, created the best games, and hosted the best sleepovers.
Her great love for all children was evident, and they loved her in return. She volunteered in an elementary classroom, worked in the temple nursery, served as ward and stake Primary President, and was an 18 year member of the Primary General Board of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. For many years she chaired the Pennies by the Inch campaign, and served on the boards of Primary Children’s Medical Center and LDS Hospital. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, served as ward Relief Society President, and
was a hostess at the Church Office Building. Ever busy, Myrl loved world travel with Wes, parties and luncheons with friends, concerts, plays, tennis, morning aerobics, scrapbooking, Jazz games, etc. She was grateful to her Heavenly Father for a full, rich life.
Preceded in death by her husband Wes (1994); sisters Neta Washburn and Emily Redd; brothers LaVar, Guy and Bruce Washburn; and granddaughter Kimberly Hamilton. Survived by her sons; sister and best friend Beverly (Herb) Hinds; brother Clem (Donna) Washburn; 15grandchildren; 61 great grandchildren; and one great, great grandchild. Our special thanks to the wonderful and loving care givers who helped make Myrl’s last years active and happy.
