Randy LaMar Bloomquist, 79, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 20, 2023, after months of battling illness. He was surrounded by his family in the beautiful home he designed with his wife Lenna. He was born May 10, 1943, in Salt Lake City, Utah as the first child to the late LaMar and Norma Bloomquist. He married his high school sweetheart Lenna Bingham on October 11, 1962, and later they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on October 11, 1978. They spent 60 years together with eternity still to go.
He touched so many of us with his passion for living and exemplified that everywhere he went. For you it may have been working with him at one of his many careers, adventuring with him in Boy Scouts, or eating his delicious BBQ at one of his annual parties. Are you one of the few he let beat him at Backgammon or Chess? Did you meet with him for support when he was your Bishop or dance to his music remixes at a church dance? Or maybe you were lucky enough to attend a concert, play, or symphony as his guest.
He loved family parties, books, game nights, and Benihana. He spent tons of quality time taking his family snow skiing, water skiing, boating, and camping. He enjoyed sharing stories of our ancestors so we don't forget. He shared his love of the theater and symphony with friends and family making sure everyone had the opportunity to enjoy the arts with him. He and Lenna hosted many Thanksgiving and Christmas parties which brought family and friends together. He DJ'd for church youth dances in the '70s and '80s; he was so cool. We will never forget his love for Disney and our family trips to Disneyland. Music was a huge part of his life. He was easily moved by a great piece of music and obsessed with the band Chicago. He liked to be on the cutting edge of technology and had one of the very first handheld video cameras. He left us with great footage of our life with him. He was also a dance Dad. He loved going to every dance recital and loved bragging about his kids.
He spent countless hours over 48 years volunteering for the Boy Scouts of America. When living in Granger he was heavily involved in the Varsity Scouting Program and especially loved the "Big Event" held annually before scout camp. After he and Lenna moved to Midvale, he became a District Commissioner. This leadership position is responsible for hundreds of units to ensure they receive support from the council. In 2001 he was awarded the Silver Beaver. This prestigious award is given to those who perform community service through hard work, self-sacrifice, dedication, and many years of service in the Boy Scouts of America. His love for scouting is deep. He was a great influence in helping Scott earn his Eagle Scout Award and serve an LDS mission.
In the early years of their marriage, Randy was a restaurant manager for Marriott Hot Shoppes and moved his family to the East Coast where he was promoted and given his own store. When they decided to move back home to Utah, he started his own business as a property manager.
His active lifestyle abruptly changed in 1984 at age 41 when he was electrocuted and subsequently paralyzed from the chest down. As a paraplegic, he was never to walk again and was told he would only live another 10 years, but he lived for 40 more years and his family is so grateful for this miracle. Being in a wheelchair was challenging and yet he thrived. He went back to school for a career in mainframe programming at American Express. He drove a hand-controlled van so he could continue to participate in life, family, community, Scouts, and church.
He was called to serve as Bishop for the Union Fort 4th Ward in the late 90s. He was responsible to complete annual charter renewals for scout troops and packs. A difficult job that he mastered and helped other Bishops complete for their scouts.
He was always upbeat and helpful with a dad joke at the ready. He leaves behind a lasting legacy of hard work, determination, integrity, and tenacity. He was the embodiment of soldiering on. We will always remember his unwavering love for his family. We love you and we will always remember you.
He is survived by his wife Lenna of 60 years; five children Scott, Sheri Johnson (Jerry), Wendy, Jenny Dean (Justin), and Amy; 12 grandchildren Aaron, Elise, Taylor, Kennedi, Sierra Silva (Dakota), Alexis, Rylee McEwan (Devin), McKenzie, Tyler, Macey, Jack, and Jessie; two great-grandchildren Lariah and Mavis; and four siblings Gary (Pat), Vickie Slagowski (Randy), Danny (Debbie), Connie Goble (Ed).
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 27, 2023, at noon at the Union Fort 3rd Ward on 6710 South 1300 East in Cottonwood Heights, UT 84047. A viewing will be held Sunday, February 26, 2023, from 5-7 pm and again one hour before the funeral at the Union Fort 3rd Ward.
