Our dear Rex Clayton Spangler passed from this life on April 8, 2026. He was born in Oakridge, Tennessee on May 23, 1954, to James Alred Spangler and Lorna Darlene Angle. After his parents divorced, Lorna moved them to Salt Lake City, Utah where most of her family lived.
His father’s love was felt over the miles through calls, visits and gifts. Rex also gained a beautiful, loving sister, Jennifer, through his father’s second marriage.
Rex and his brother Barry were born with microcephaly, a condition that severely impacted their health and intellectual development. At the time of his birth, it was commonly suggested that people born with this condition be institutionalized. Lorna would not allow that to happen to her boys.
During the week, while Lorna worked, Rex and Barry stayed first at the American Fork Training Center, then at Columbus Community Center, and finally at a TKJ group home. She would pick them up to spend weekends and holidays with her. After a fall that broke his back, Rex was moved to Cascades at Riverwalk, where he spent his final years.
Rex was wrapped in love, showered with everything he needed, and provided opportunities to live the fullest life possible. There were trips to Disneyland, Hawaii and Tennessee and get-togethers with extended family, piles of gifts at Christmas and birthdays, and big backyard birthday parties with tons of food and many guests.
Rex was a joy with his endearing smile and big hugs. Rex loved superheroes, Coke, wearing his Santa suite and watching movies.
Over the years he was loved and cared for by many wonderful people. A special thanks to all the people from TKJ and Cascades at Riverwalk that loved him and helped care for him. You became a treasured part of his family.
Rex is preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived by his brother Barry Spangler and sister Jennifer Schooley.
There will be a graveside service and dedication on Friday April 17, at 11:00 AM, at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 Highland Dr.
