1925 ~ 2011
Roy Madsen, age 86, died Sept. 4, 2011 at his home surrounded by family and loved ones. He was born Feb. 16, 1925 in Ogden Utah to Clarence LeRoy and Mary Louise Taylor Madsen. He attended Ogden High School, Weber State and BYU.
He married Barbara Burrows in Jan. 1951 and together they had five children. They were later divorced. He remarried in Dec. of 1960 to Frances Rose Floyd Brooks who survives him today. Their marriage prevailed over 50 years and was temporarily suspended with his passing.
Roy was a decorated veteran who served as a tail gunner in the Air Force during WWII. After being shot down the second time, he credits his life being saved by the Czechoslovakian partisans who helped him flee from the pursuing German army. After his discharge, he was called back to Czechoslovakia to serve a mission for the LDS church.
Together Roy and Frances built a very successful Shaklee business which allowed them the opportunity to enjoy traveling all around the world. After the fall of the iron curtain, he was able to travel back to his beloved Czechoslovakia several times where he was instrumental in honoring the American service men and women who had lost their lives during WWII. Many of Roy’s personal effects from the Air Force are currently on display in the museum honoring the Slovak National Uprising in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia.
Roy was an avid BYU fan and loved to travel around the country watching the football and basketball teams. There were not many home, tournament or bowl games that he was not in attendance.
He is survived by his wife, children Deborah Madsen, Marsha (Jared) Parker, Becky (Craig) Apgood, Jeff (Julie) Madsen, Greg (Tammy) Madsen, Paul (Kristi) Brooks, Robyn (Ed) Boissoneau, Christine Brooks, Lori Brooks and Daniel (Christie) Madsen, 30 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Roy was preceded in death by parents, his sisters Ruth Ogilvie and Patricia Neff, and brother-in-law Wyman Redd.
The family wishes to especially thank Holly Duncan for her 7 years of personal service and care for Roy and to CareSource Hospice for facilitating dad’s comfort in his last few days.
A viewing will be held at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park and Mortuary on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011 from 6-8 pm and again on Friday morning at 11 am with funeral services at the mortuary commencing at 12 noon.
