Our beautiful Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Cousin, and Friend, RoyAnne passed away in the early morning of June 2, 2026. RoyAnne was born July 4, 1938 to Annie Andrus and Roy Tygesen. RoyAnne always loved everything about the Fourth of July and was thrilled to be able to see the Statue of Liberty on her birthday when visiting her relatives in New York City.
RoyAnne grew up in Magna, Utah near the old site of Cyprus High School where her mother was a beloved teacher, and her father had an attorney practice in the home. Her parents instilled in her independence, courage, empathy, and love. RoyAnne was active in cheerleading, sports, and music. It was in Junior High school, where she met the love of her life, Verl “Bubs” Newbold while playing the flute in band class. He sat behind her in class and played his drumsticks on her piggy tails. And the rest . . . is history.
Following in the footsteps of her mother, RoyAnne attended Utah State University and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education and thus began a lifelong pursuit of preparing small souls for the world ahead of them. Over her 40 years of teaching, she reached the lives and intellect of hundreds of children to whom she was a memorable stepping stone in their lives with creative and substantive learning, most recently at Libby Edwards Elementary School in Granite District. She was a natural artist, and her handwriting was beautiful, and her creativity was boundless, all of which she passed on to her students.
Bubs and RoyAnne were married in 1960. They traveled throughout Europe and then the US National Parks in a cool Volkswagen bug, which was always their dream together. They continued to teach and touch the lives of their many students, and they were golfing partners, an athletic prowess they passed on to their son Sharm, a golf professional in California. RoyAnne and Bubs were the proud and loving parents of Sharm, Dana, and Kelcey.
RoyAnne had the unique talent of generating enthusiasm with everyone she met and in everything she did! She always smiled charmingly when she met anyone, new or old, which made the person feel so welcomed by her warm and inquisitive nature. She projected positivity to everyone and possessed an acceptance that made one feel embraced by her genuine affection. She championed everyone’s endeavors, and each accomplishment was met with superlative praise! Her energy seemed boundless, especially in her communication with children, cousins, students, nurses–Everyone! RoyAnne was an avid John Denver fan and attended many of his concerts. She was an expert gardner and grew the best tomatoes around and her salsa attracted admirers far and wide.
RoyAnne was preceded in death by her loving and dedicated husband Bubs in 2020; her parents, Annie and Roy Tygesen; her infant sister Marie; her younger brother Butch Tygesen; and her granddaughter, Annie Ricks. She is survived by her son Sharm Newbold (Cheryl) of San Diego, California; Dana Yoon (Peter) of Jersey City, New Jersey; and Kelcey Ricks (Gary) of Logan, Utah; her older brother, Penny Tygesen, and sister Laura Klein; her 5 grandchildren, Ty, Ellena, Jack, Blake, and Sloane, and her beloved nieces and nephews.
