Rudolf “Rudy” Zitzmann, 82, passed away peacefully March 5, 2017 with a backdrop of falling snow, after nearly a year long battle with cancer. He was the eldest child born to Kurt Zitzmann and Berta Möllinger Zitzmann in Oppau, Germany. Surviving the hardships of war torn Germany as a child, he was lovingly sponsored by his younger sister Christa, who immigrated first to New York, with Rudy following in 1955.
He was quickly drafted into the US Air Force, but not before meeting his soon to be wife of almost 54 years, Carola. He served his enlistment proudly, as an aircraft mechanic, working on some of the first US jet fighters. Stationed in France, he helped his youngest brother Kurt come to America, and was the father figure in his life.
Once back in America, Rudy married his love, Carola, in June of 1963. They settled in NY to raise their family and he worked as a consulting engineer. In 1978 Rudy moved his family to Utah to be closer to his sister and brother, thus embarking on a new chapter in life. He was in charge of franchising and eventually became CEO of Tunex, Inc., the name and logo of which he created. Rudy gave much of his heart and soul helping the company succeed as well as the numerous franchisees, some of which were like family. Many say though, he moved to be closer to his favorite ski resort, Alta. He earned his life goal, the 80 year Silver Eagle pin and skiing for free.
Rudy was also a very committed member of the Masonic Brotherhood, in both Lessing Lodge 608, NY and as a proud member of Canyon Lodge 13 in Midvale, UT combining for almost 52 years.
Rudy loved the beauty of the outdoors. He was an avid gardener, there wasn’t a plant that didn’t flourish under his touch. He also traveled, visiting family and lifelong friends in Germany, as well as worldwide soaking in as many of the wonders and beauty that he could. He also loved sports, a well known soccer fanatic, and spent much of his spare time coaching youth teams and was thrilled to attend several major World Cup events.
He is survived by his loving wife Carola, three children Bobby, Debbie, and Rick, and especially by his beloved grandchildren Julia and Liam. Rudy was a lover of the simple joys in life. His passion to find that joy every day was infectious to everyone who knew him, family, friends, coworkers, and teammates. We will all miss you dearly.
