It is with much love and gratitude that the family of Russell Spencer Montague would like to share that he was able to pass peacefully to the other side on Friday, February 9, 2024. On this day, he was surrounded by his children, who showered him with love and attention, never leaving his side. Russ was blessed with a much longer and richer life than anyone would have guessed after surviving both a brain tumor removal in the 70’s and a massive heart attack in 2009.
In the words of one of his most admired musicians, Neil Young, “As you go through life, you’ve got to see the valleys as well as the peaks.” Russ embodied these words by enjoying his travels with family, hours of golf, camping and fishing adventures, as well as being an avid sports fan in spite of the challenges he was left with post-tumor.
Russ was born in 1955 to Cecil and Alma Montague in SLC, UT. He graduated from South High School where he swam competitively and played guitar and sang lead with friends in their garage band. He also earned an Eagle Scout Award while participating in the BSA, then continued his life in service through a variety of positions within the LDS church. Russ had such a unique gift of being able to connect with everyone he met, instantly making them feel like a friend.
He is survived by his children, Halie(Kenny), Dan(Lindsey), Lynsie(Levi), and Todd(Heather). He had such a sweet bond with his grandchildren, who truly were the joys of his life: Julia, Connor, Josh, Jack, Kou, Chance, Carlie, and Colby. Russ (aka Uncle Buck) will also be remembered by his siblings, Roger(Nena), Rachelle(Kevin), Rich(Karen), and his many nieces and nephews. Russ is preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Alma Montague. The Montague family would like to express their appreciation to the decades-worth of healthcare workers who provided dedicated support to Russ.
A visitation with Russ’ family will be held Friday, February 16th at 11:00 am at Wasatch Lawn Memorial (3401 S Highland Dr, Millcreek, UT 84106) with a graveside service to follow at 12:15 pm.
