Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt & friend
Shirley Ann Chapman Rook was born January 3, 1936 in Goshen, Utah to Hilthon Chapman and Violet Hansen. She was the youngest of 5 children. She is survived by her older brother Alvin Chapman of Labarge, Wyoming. Shirley grew up in the Salt Lake area and graduated from South High, Class of 1954. That same year she was set up on a blind date with Maxfield Roberts Rook by his sister. Shirley had already had her sights set on Max after seeing him go on a date with a neighbor when she was playing with paper dolls on her front porch.
They were married September 30, 1954 in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all Eternity. They were blessed with 3 children: Brad, Shyrl An, and Robyn and raised them in Murray, Utah. Max and Shirley were married for 36 years before Max passed away in 1991.
Starting in the mid 1970’s, she was the Credit Manager/Treasurer for A.A. Maycock. She served on the Board for National Association of Credit Managers for 32 years and was recognized as Credit Manager of the year in 2001. Shirley worked for A.A. Maycock for three decades. Shirley’s love of golf blossomed as a by-product of her career.
Shirley was the Great-Great Granddaughter of Martin Harris, one of the Three Witnesses to the Book of Mormon. She had a steadfast testimony of her Grandfather and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Her love and devotion did not just stop with words. She was an active member who loved the Young Women’s program and teaching Sunday School, but especially Girls Camp, as long as there were no snakes. She and Max loved performing in the Church Roadshows, plays, and speaking about the Gospel.
Shirley was a beautiful seamstress, who loved crocheting and making quilts for her family. She loved sports including baseball, basketball, and Utes football. You always knew what team was winning from anywhere in the house. She loved gardening, animals, large family gatherings, Christmas with her grandchildren, and watching them open baby dolls. Shirley loved playing Canasta with her and Max’s lifelong friends Dick and Wilma Jepperson.
Shirley was one of the kindest, sweetest, and most genuine people you would ever meet, and you did not forget meeting her. Her love for her family was unmatched and was her number one priority. Nothing made Shirley happier than a new marriage or grandbaby. She will be greatly missed and her legacy will live on in her 3 children, 15 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, nieces, nephews, and loved ones.
