Sydney Young Sharp Aldous, loyal wife and companion, devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, true believer, noble descendant of Brigham Young, and tireless servant of the Lord, passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2022 from complications of surgery.
Sydney was born on January 23, 1943 in Salt Lake City to Geraldine Parkinson Young and John Creer Sharp. She graduated from Olympus High School and the University of Utah and in September of 1965 married the love of her life, Edwin Winder (Ted) Aldous in the Salt Lake Temple. The two had met three years earlier at a party in Logan Canyon and for their first date saw “Lawrence of Arabia” and got hamburgers at Hires Big H, a spot that remained a favorite through their 57 years of marriage. Together, Ted and Syd raised five children. As a couple, they taught, shared, and lived the gospel of Jesus Christ. They were generous, thoughtful, consistent, and kind not only with family but with neighbors, friends, and strangers.
Sydney never did anything halfway—she took it over the top or didn’t do it at all. This was especially true of her church callings, which ranged from Merry Miss teacher in the Primary organization to serving as a member of the Young Women’s General Board under Ardith Kapp, the ninth general president of the Young Women’s Organization. Together, Ted and Sydney served three missions: two based in Washington DC and one based in Boston. While Ted served as the medical advisor for the missions, Sydney kept busy working as a docent in area museums, a guide in temple visitor centers, and a substitute grandmother for the missionaries.
Sydney had a gift for creating beauty everywhere she went; literally everything she touched became more lovely. Her home was a showpiece, her yard the envy of the neighborhood, her wardrobe a lesson in the latest fashions—even her handwriting was elegant.
Perhaps Sydney’s greatest legacy is her family. All five of her children are happy and healthy, and combined they have given Sydney and Ted 25 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Because of Sydney and Ted’s extraordinary focus on family and their efforts to foster closeness and genuine friendship, their children and grandchildren are each other’s best friends and dearest companions. In this way, Sydney’s influence will live on even though she is no longer physically with us. We know she is in the spirit world loving the spirits of the two great-grandchildren who are currently preparing to join our family. How lucky those spirits are to be joining the legacy she has created!
Sydney is survived by her eternal companion Edwin Winder (Ted) Aldous and her children Anne (David) Whitaker, Jennifer (Stephen) Moffat, Michael (Kortnie) Aldous, Noelle (Bryan) Wright, and Lindsay (Richard) Gilbert as well as by her brothers John C. (Jennifer) Sharp, Jr. and Christopher Y. Sharp. She is also survived by her 25 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents Geraldine Young Sharp and John Creer Sharp.
Friends are invited to join the family in celebrating Sydney’s remarkable life at a viewing to be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 30 at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park and Mortuary, 3401 Highland Drive in Salt Lake City. There will also be a viewing from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 1, followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m. Both will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 2245 East 3900 South in Salt Lake City.
