

Ted was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on October 12, 1938, to Gerrit Smith and Helena Swart Smith.
He had five siblings: Joseph, William “Bill”, Marjorie, Gerrit Robert “Bob”, and Jerry. Raised in the Sugar House area, he graduated from South High School in 1956. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Netherlands Mission from 1959–1962.
Following his mission, Ted began a lifelong career in the candy business, working with Harry Nelson Co. and Thrifty Foods, managing most of the western states.
He married Velanne Kingston, who had three children—Tom, Monty, and Leasa—on April 18, 1966. They had three children together: Anna, Lizette, and Stephanie. Velanne passed away March 19, 1974.
Ted later met Marie Kristensen, who had two children, Kristian Giles and Misty. They were married on May 17, 1982. Together, they had one child, Theodore “Teddy.”After a short retirement, Ted returned to the candy business, servicing for Jelly Belly, and was known by his family and friends as the “Jelly Belly Man.”
Ted is survived by his wife of 43 years, Marie; his children Anna Jenkins, Lizette Pace, Stephanie (Carl) Gerrard, and Teddy (Kristin) Smith; and his stepchildren Tom (Gail) Madsen, Monty (Tonyia) Madsen, Leasa Cameron, Kristian Giles, and Misty (Rick) Vrieze, along with his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Velanne; his parents; all his siblings; and his grandson, Matthew Wesley Richards.
